Anyone have a child with a suspicious mole?

C has a mole that I'm pretty sure is growing.  The soonest I can see a derm is july (first appointment).  The pedi today was concerned about some aspects of it, not concerned about others (it's larger than she would like and I think it is growing.  But she thinks it's symmetrical and that the borders are regular.  I was not sure of either of those things).

Anyway wondering if anyone has any experience.  He has no other risk factors for pedi melanoma.

thanks.

Re: Anyone have a child with a suspicious mole?

  • I had one as a child on my back.  I had it removed...I was probably around 8.  I have a huge nasty scar from it.  It was fine, no cancer or anything.  But my mom now wishes that she has a plastic surgeon do the surgery instead of the dermatologist.
  • 2 of my children have had suspicious moles removed, and we have a few we are tracking (measuring). My sister passed away from melanoma last summer so we are very careful with moles. The ones we had removed appeared suddenly on areas they don't develop as frequently.

Thanks guys.  Michelle I am sorry about your sister.  Melanoma is awful.

  • DS has a large'ish one on his face (lower right chin area) that he's always had and has been growing bigger. I have not had it checked out but I think it's probably time to do so. FIL passed away from melanoma 6 months ago...

C's is above his ear (under his hair).

  • DD has a mole on her fingertip (not a good place to have it pop up) and the derm told us to expect it to get bigger as she grows.

  • My 3 year old has one on his scalp that I first noticed a year ago.  It definitely grew in the following 4 months, then hasn't grown much since then.  I'm just taking pictures of it for now to document any growth, but I'm trying to get in to see a pediatric dermatologist for an opinion.  I had a stage 1 melanoma removed from my leg 5 years ago, so my kids do have a slightly increased risk for it.
