dirty daycare? Or just normal...

My LO came down with pneumonia at the end of last week and it was a pretty scary/bad scene. Although we've had a bad winter full or colds/ear infections and now this.. my husband is now convinced that he must have picked up this bug at daycare and we now need to find other arrangements for his care. I personally think he's over reacting a bit and we'll never know where exactly he got his bug - but I don't think it's a need for new arrangements...

just venting.. and looking for any thoughts...

Your LO probably DID pick it up at DCP, but that's the reality of being around other kids. It's not unusual and you are not likely to find a DCP that won't have a 'insert disease here" exposure at some point or another.

    This exactly!

This.  Our "Insert disease here" was stomach flu.

  • When DD has several playdates in a week she usually picks something up! But I would just make sure that DCP is washing LO's hands with soap and water before and after every meal/snack. That's all they really can do. Kids always spread germs no matter how careful you are. That's why getting kids vaccinated is so important.

Yup, and guess what?  It never ends.  Kids pick up crap at school as well.  Hell, we pick up germs and crap from work as well.

  • kids get sick at daycare. that is the reality, whether it's home or center. that being said it makes their immune system stronger in the long run

  • Totally normal.  Keira goes to daycare 4 hours a week and she has already gotten 2 colds, a staph infection and the flu.  Just remember, it builds up their immunity.
  • My DS picked up a stomach flu while at the pediatrician for the pneumonia he caught from me. Seriously. Unless your intend to put your LO in a bubble, this is going to happen no matter what you do.

Yep but the theory is that daycare kids get sick less often when they go to school.  This has been true for us.  DD (school) has only had a mild cough this season while the boys (daycare) has been out sick a couple of times.

  • It's pretty common for LOs to pick up illnesses from daycare and, unfortunately, you're not going to find a "germ-free" solution, unless you hire a personal nanny for your child. Even then, your child will be exposed to germs, just not as many.

If your husband is concerned, then have him ask the daycare about their cleaning and disinfecting policies. It'll most likely make him feel better to know that the children's hands are being washed after diaper changes, teachers are wearing gloves during meal times and diaper changes (obviously different gloves, lol!) and the toys are washed and disinfected at least once a day, if not every day. Yes, my daughter has also picked up a bug or two from daycare this cold/flu season. It's been a particularly rough cold/flu season here and it has sucked having a sick kid, but I've just figured it was par for the course, with a young toddler.

I just take solace in the idea that I know, for a fact, that the daycare is definitely cleaner than my own home, lol!

  • It's totally normal, but stinks! DD is constantly getting viruses, etc. and has even brought a few home to share with her little brother. It's inevitable they'll get sick, and even though it's tough now, they'll be better off once they get to Kindergarten. Some things that help a little:

1/4 cup of avocado a day boosts your immune system

Multi vitamin (poly vi sol or flinestones are good)

    Oranges!

I also give DD a probiotic for kids.

    GL!

This. Unless you think your DC actually looks dirty or you see something amiss, it's just the result of having so many kids in close quarters.
