VBAC

my vbac baby!

I didn't post much during pregnancy, mostly lurked..but wanted to say that I am grateful for vbac posters because it gave me the desire to have a vbac..and here is how it went:      at my 39wk appt my dr said that Shaylee was still high and I hadn't dilated past a fingertip. I was concerned about my looming deadline of a scheduled c-section.  She consulted with another OB (who would have done my c-section) and suggested I tried a foley bulb induction.

I didn't know much about this form of induction, other than it sounded uncomfortable..but I decided to give it a shot to get my vbac. She said that if it didn't work or at anytime I changed my mind..they would do the c-section.

Well to summarize the foley bulb catheter it didn't hurt being inserted and was mostly just an annoyance with being hooked up to i.v. all night and using the bathroom.  In the morning the nurse thought it had worked because it was loosening so he pulled it out. That was uncomfortable, but not painful. Well then a dr checked me and she didn't think I had dilated much more than 1 cm.   I heard different versions, but mostly that they don't think the foley bulb was inserted properly or that it was removed too soon.

Either way, atleast I got my induction started and then they put me on pitocin.  I didn't understand at the time why what they had done was safer, but cervadil would have remained in my system too long in case of an emergancy. Pitocin leaves your system in a few minutes if their was a problem.   So I spent all day on pitocin.  At first it didn't seem to be helping me progress enough and my cervix was still high as well as her head.  But finally after 8 or 9 hrs things magically happened the way they should.  I went from 6 to 8 to 10 cm in less than 2 hrs.       BTW, I had planned to not get an epidural. However, the pitocin made the contractions come so quickly and strongly and everytime I was checked it was extremely painful..so I gave in and got the epidural. I am glad I did.

So I was started on pitocin at 8am and after 6:30pm they checked me and I was at 10 and fully effaced. Call the doctor!  Then they had me do 'practice pushes' and oh her head is right there! get the room ready for delivery!  and within 30 minutes of pushing she was born!  7lbs 6oz and 20".   I didn't even realize that I had torn..but I did in four places.(thus grateful for that epidural!) she is now 12 days old and I am still sore..BUT I have been able to do everything I need to as a mother and the recovery has been waaaay easier than my c-section was.  I was in tears while pushing because I couldn't believe I was actually having my baby vaginally and that I was physically and mentally present for her birth. I highly recommend vbac for anyone who is able!

  • Congrats!  Your last few sentences had me in tears.  I have always wondered what it must feel like emotionally for a woman who is moments away from succeeding with a VBAC.  Congrats again!

  • Thanks for sharing. It's always great to hear another success story - especially since your situation sound very similar to mine at the moment. I'm hoping for more progress when I get checked tomorrow. As of last week, I was only a fingertip too.
  • Congratulations, I'm so glad things went your way and that your birth team was cooperative in helping you through the induction.

I think about that all the time, too. Maybe visualizing those moments will help us get there ourselves! :) CONGRATS to you, OP!

Seriously, me too!  When you want something so badly and everyone tells you can't have it or are crazy for wanting it, it must be a huge relief.

OP - Congrats & thanks for posting.
