How do you stop biting?

DD is a very mellow, laid back baby but recently has bit my niece 4 times. They see each other every day because my sister watches DD for me. My niece, who's 4, doesn't like to share and what ever DD is playing with she has to have and takes it from DD.

Up until recently DD just moved on to the next thing and didn't really care. Four times now, when my niece is trying to pull something from DD, DD has grabbed her hand and bit it. I'm sure she's using it as a way to keep her toy and my sister is working with my niece on sharing, but I don't want it to become a huge problem.

Any suggestions on how to stop this? Thanks!

Re: How do you stop biting?

  • DS doesn't bite a lot, but anytime he has, we say "No biting" very firmly, and give him something else to distract him.

  • If DS bites, I firmly say no and redirect. If it happens again, I do the same thing, except I warn him he'll go into timeout if he does it again. If he does it a 3rd time, we do timeout for 1 minute. Most of the time he listens after the 2nd time.

  • A suggestion I was given by a family member was to move LO's arm into the path of the bite, so LO bites themselves. Of course you don't want your niece doing that, but we use that method when DD tries to bit us when we have to take something away from her she shouldn't have.

  • We usually tell ds "No Bite" very sternly, and if he tries it again, then he gets a time-out.

  • DS so far only tries to bite me and I'm worried that it will happen at daycare so I'm glad to see the advice and am hoping to find something that works for us. I can't imagine that getting him to sit in time out for a minute would even be feasible - he is 13 months old - but it might be worth trying.

This is us too! Definitely some good advice that I'll be trying.
