Baby Names

Unpopular opinion: baby names

What is your unpopular opinion when it comes to names? Lately it seems EVERYONE loves " new," but old names as well as some trendy names. What are some you still just can't stand for one reason or another? This isn't intended to offend anyone. Just wanted to see what names people still don't feel comfortable jumping on board with.

I will go first I could never name my baby:

Oliver ( just doesn't sit right with me)

Oscar ( can't get a grumpy man out of my head)

Poppy ( I can't imagine a professional with this name)

Re: Unpopular opinion: baby names

  • I'm with your on Oliver and Oscar, I do not see the appeal at. all.  I also dislike the 'old lady' names like Hazel and Evelyn.  In my area it seems like all the -Lee and -Lyn names are really popular too and I'm not big fan of those for the most part either.

I don't mind most of the "older" names making a comeback, but I can not stand Oliver or Henry.  I also dislike most of the -lynn names (especially the made up ones) floating around right now.  Anything with a -lee ending also makes it hard for me to picture on a grown woman.

  • 1) I hate mn posts. I don't think middle names matter enough to stress out over and devote a whole post to. I never even open them.

    2) I think picking out a nn before the baby is born is a waste of time.

  • A lot of people here seem to like more traditional and/or older names like William, Henry, Thomas, John, Caroline, Claire, Elizabeth, Evelyn and Charlotte.  Some of these are nice enough but I either feel meh about them or hate them.

  • Boys names for girls (Avery, Dylan, etc), -son names, dead president names (or other surnames for FNs), trades names (Cooper, Hunter, etc), place names (Brooklyn, Sydney, etc), and seasons/month/nature names (Spring, June, Brooke).  Edited to add:  Forgot my biggest pet peeve names (the ones above I don't HATE just get sick of).  I hate random Ys, yooneek (mispelled on purpose) names, and smooshed/made up names.

Yep, lots of names on this board that are NMS... lol.

  • I agree about mn posts. Just use a family name! I very rarely respond to posts asking for a middle name out of the blue.

But my pet peeve is "name him what you will call him." That drives me to the edge. A name is used for so many different situations ? give your child a name that is good for all contexts or that is adaptable. Don't put Jax on the birth certificate!

  • The old women names that are SO cutesy now

    ELLA- yuck

    EMMA- yuck

    NORAH- yuck

  • While I'm not using any of these things, I usually don't mind alliteration or rhyming. In my opinion it's a case-by-case issue as to whether or not it's too much (and some are). From what I see though, most people would say no immediately to any alliterative or rhyming names.

Indeed.  I think of strippers when I hear that name.
