Puree - table food transition

My (almost) 14 month old has been slow to take to table food.  Definitely some texture issues.  Daycare has gone hardcore with us for the past month and we have seen some improvement by only offering him table food.  As a result, he mostly eats carbs.  He has hummus and peanutbutter for protein, but does not do much for fruits aside for the puree that I work into his morning yogurt and vegetables come in the form of crunchies and veggie sticks...

The ped said he would be fine eating this way for a month or so...we are now at a month and I really just want to feed him a pureed vegetable to make sure his diet is balanced!

WWYD, hang in a little longer or regress a bit and slip in a puree once a day?  When did your LO make the transition?

TIA

Re: Puree - table food transition

  • How about softer fruits (like banana or mango or avocado) or cooked veggies? DS also loves tomatoes, cooked broccoli, asparagus, carrots, sweet potatoes. DS was done with purees entirely by 10 months or so.

  • I would try making purees vs. buying jarred food.  That way he is getting fresh veggies and you can increase the consistency gradationally.  Jarred food is far less chunky than the veggies I made towards the end and now.  My DD still has a mix of both and neither me or my pedi are concerned since I am giving her table food essentially.

  • DD was eating soft table food at 7 months and off the puree/jar food very soon after that.  I would try soft cheese maybe steamed veggies like squash or carrots.
  • We still do pureed veggies and meats.  DS is very picky.  We keep offering his table foods, but if he won't eat them they get pureed.

  • Try steaming her veggies and fruits until very, very mushy. They won't be a puree, but they'll be a lot softer and might be more appealing to LO. As you start having success with those you can gradually make them less mushy. Good luck!

  • I slip veggies into a lot of things - like I'll boil frozen mixed veggies with pasta (usually shell shaped) and then add tomata sauce or just butter and DS will eat it it right up.  He also loves fried rice with veggies (I also use the frozen mixed veggies in that).  As for fruits you should just keep trying with fresh fruits.  My DS loves strawberries, black berries, blueberries, grapes, peaches and pears.  I just cut the berries in half and chop the rest into cubes and he eats fruit for every meal.  The other thing is to just make sure you are sitting him down with table food every time you sit down to eat.  Keep offering him more stuff - if you cut back and start giving him pureed food again he's not going to learn to eat the table food.  Just make sure he's getting enough milk, etc. and he should be fine in the long run.
  • Thanks all. I make all my own food already.  He definitely prefers the firmer/drier foods for self-feeding and has turned away from any table food taht I present on a fork - but we will keep trying!
