Re: peanut butter... how/when to introduce?

  • He was about 9 months old and I gave it to him on apple slices

  • He was about 10 months and had half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My mom is a nurse and was with us, just in case he got an allergy she would know what to look for more then I did.

  • We started a little after 12 months. I just spread some on an english muffin for him, he loves it!
  • I did it at 1 year.  I just gave him a PB&J sandwich and he loved it.  No issues.
  • 11 months.  She ate some of my sandwich.  We have no history of a peanut allergy, so I honestly wasn't worried about it.

  • She was 12 months. We just spread a thin layer on some toast. It's her favorite now :)

  • DS started at 9 months because he needed the fat. We put it on crackers at the time.

  • The newish recommendations/studies are saying that it doesn't matter when you give your child a food - if he/she is going to be allergic, waiting won't make a difference.

That said, I was very leery about giving Natalie peanutbutter simply because of her history and my history, so I waited until she was 18months old......no particular reason.   Our pediatric dietitian recommended that if I was worried about allergies to just spread a little on her cheek and see what happens.   I did that and she broke out in hives within seconds.

For some other reason, I probably won't wait as long with Dominic.

  • Our pedi has asked us to still hold off on it.  We can give him anything else, just no nuts.
  • We did at 9 months, which is when our pedi said it was ok. I just put a thin layer on a piece of toast.

  • We introduced it around 7 months as a sandwich cut up into bits.

  • I've been thinking about offering it to him so I'm glad for this post. We have no history of any food allergies and so far neither has DS so I shouldn't be as nervous about it as I have been. I think we might try a little today.

  • just 2 weeks ago. on an apple slice. he had an allergic reaction. (eggs also) and went for further allergy testing. i dont really know if there is a "proper" age to give it.. i think if they're allergic, it doesn't matter what age. just watch for a reaction when you do give it!! Smile
