Underbite?

A few days ago we started noticing my LO has an underbite.  He also pops his jaw -when he opens his mouth, he snaps it back down.  I mentioned the popping to my pedi last time and she said it's fine and not to worry.  And now we're noticing the underbite which seems like it's crooked on top of it.  I look back to his photos for the past few months and it's actually a common thing he's had.  This is an example..  We never noticed it b/c we only notice how adorable the smile is, but completely didn't see the underbite.

The underbite doesn't bother me as much, but he now talks with his mouth really crooked. And after doing some web searching it says that it may cause migraines, speech issues, TMJ, neck pain.. and a few others.  If it was just an underbite it wouldn't bother me, but it seems like there are issues that come with it and most get it corrected (surgery at around 8 years old).

Has anyone ever dealt with this?

Re: Underbite?

  • Have you taken him to the dentist yet?  DD has a very significant overbite, which I believe she inherited from DH, and DH did have some speech problems as a child, maybe as a result of the overbite.  I am planning to take DD to the dentist sometime around her 2nd b-day (which is in May) and I will be asking lots of questions.  There may be nothing you can do but just monitor it, but at least get some peace of mind from talking about it with a professional.

  • Thanks! i'm going to call this morning for an appointment. I guess it's better to evaluate.
  • I had a severe underbite as a child. My mom took me to a dentist as soon as she noticed (it's really evident in photos), and he did experimental braces from the ages of 3-9 and I've never had to have the surgery or had any problems since. Maybe you can find a dentist who will try braces when he's a little bit older?
  • I had an underbite and crossbite as a child.  I had an expander in my top jaw, then braces for a couple years between 6th and 8th grade, which fixed everything.  I still have a very slight crossbite that I notice in pictures of me laughing hard (mostly drunky pics ;) ), but other than that everything is normal.  It's weird because I seem to have started a trend in my family.  My little sister had the same issue, as well as my 2 nieces and I'm noticing DD's jaw following the same route.  Somehow my older sister has perfect teeth, not fair!

im going to ask the dentist when i go. It would be nice to get it resolved before it becomes an issues and a non-surgical way.

    thanks everyone
