I wake up before baby

We bedshare.  I can hear lo's every peep and I am okay with that.  Sometime around 4 or 5 hours after we've gone to sleep she starts stirring. Maybe this woke me up, but maybe it was the fact that I'm engorged.  Right now it's 4... we went to bed at 10:30 after she ate around 9:30.  She began peeping at 3:30. I took the opportunity to clean my pump supplies and move the laundry over.  I then went and grabbed DD, changed her diaper, and now she's nursing. I'd rather do that than pump and have to feed her a bottle.  She usually falls asleep better to the boob than to a bottle.

So... if I want DD to STTN, do I have to ignore these peeps and wait until she's all the way awake to get her up?  If I do that I have to pump or be in pain and not sleeping anyhow.  Not really looking for advice, but I've just been getting fascinated by hearing about lots of lo's STTN.

  • DD sleeps from 930-abut 3/4am. I wouldn't expect your LO to STTN just yet. she's still too young to really be doing that. If you look up the term "STTN" at this age docs consider a 5-6hrs stretch STTN. I personally don't. but if you don;t want to kill your supply or get an infection then you are goign to have to either nurse or pump sometime during that night.

My DS didn;t fully STTN until he was almost 7mos old and he was over to formula by 4mos.

  • i did the same thing as you, wake her up to eat if she stirred. i then started waiting for her to fully wake up and would pump. yes, i would have to deal with a crying baby for a minute but i knew the feeding would please her. she now sleeps from midnight to 6. which for me is through the night because my fiance and i got to bed at midnight and he wakes up at 6 for work which rouses me. it took time to get kylie to do this, but since she was 5 weeks she's been on this schedule.

  • I wait until DS is fussing/crying. If I get up for the peeps I find him sleeping soundly. He sleeps 7-8 hours now before wanting to eat. If the engorgement wakes me up I pump a little (1oz) to get comfortable. Too much tells your body to keep producing milk in the night. After a few days your body adjusts and makes milk only when you need it.

  • maybe i jump the gun, but if LO is grunting and stirring, i will get him up and do a quick dreamfeed and he goes back down right away.  if i were to test it and let him get to the full out crying, i would bet it'd be a lot harder to get him back down.

personally, i think 10-4 is a great stretch of sleep and your LO probably needs to eat by that time anyway.  we are on a bad schedule here b/c DS goes down around 9 and sleeps until 1, but i usually don't go to sleep until 11 or so.

I totally agree!  That's why I think it is so interesting to hear about other people's babies sleeping longer. I'm trying not to judge but wondering if they are waiting until they are full force crying... I personally could never do that!

  • My DD usually goes down between 11-12 and sleeps until 7. I don't wait for her to be crying. I react to every grunt/noise but will not get her out of the bassinet if she is still asleep (my girl is a noisy sleeper and routinely sounds awake when she isn't). Usually between 6:45-7 a.m. she will start making noise and when I look in the bassinet she is wide awake, smiling and talking to the curtains. At this point I get her up to eat. I hate waiting for her to be crying, since she claws at my boobs if I do. She is gaining weight like a champ and is happy and healthy so I am letting her sleep until 7 if that's what she wants (I'm not complaining!).
