Advice Needed!

So we have successfully gotten rid of the pacifier! Going on day 4 with no pacifier, and no care of needing it! Now the question is.. how can we get him to fall asleep on his own? Haha. He always fell asleep either with the pacifier, or my breast, since he is still breastfeeding, and now that the pacifier is gone.. he will only fall asleep on my breast! Its all fine for now, but we have another little one on the way in October. I know most of you will say to just wean him.. but I don't want to do that just yet. He loves breastfeeding, and I'd rather let him wean himself before the baby comes if he does. Otherwise, I may tandem feed. Any advice?

Re: Advice Needed!

  • Have you heard of the Jay Gordon method? I was planning to use it until my DS weaned himself.

  • No I have not? What is it?

It's a gentle approach to weaning for older babies (I believe 14m is the earliest you can do JGM). I like that it isn't a CIO method, although there might be some crying.

  • I'll take a look at it tomorrow when my eyes aren't so tired lol

You mentioned weaning though.. and I don't want to wean him. Oh guess I should add we also still co-sleep.

I don't think this is necessarily for weaning. Just for night wakings and/or nursing to sleep. I wasn't planning on weaning when I was going to use this, I just needed him to be able to fall asleep without the breast.

But if you are fine with him doing it...then why not just keep doing it and let him give it up on his own?

  • My twins are still nursing as well.  When I decided I would start preparing to wean, I started nursing to sleep, but then jostle a little to put the boobs away and continue to rock a few minutes until drifting off, then put them down.  I also started decreasing how long I nurse before bed by like, a minute a week.  Now I only nurse 5 minutes.  I did this to stop nursing at wake-ups around 18 months and they finally began to STTN.  I am not sure when I will stop completely either.

  • Jay Gordon is for night weaning, so you can still nurse during the day as much as you want. You can even nurse for bedtime but just not for night wakings. He actually is totally open to co-sleeping and talks about strategies specific to co-sleeping. I've thought about it and read about it but haven't tried it yet. I decided we weren't quite ready. My son is simultaneously starting to walk, talk and grow 5 new teeth. I figured I wouldn't add anything to his plate right now, even though he isn't sleeping great.

  • Okay so I guess some of you took what I asked wrong haha.

I'm not asking how to keep him from waking up at night/feeding.

I'm asking how to get him to fall asleep on his own without the boob.
