I think we're getting another dog...

A friend of mine is fostering an 8 year old basset hound.  I had the boys at their house and they fell in love with him.  They just kept laughing at him (how could you not with his long dopey ears and adorableness!).  Well, then a lady was going to adopt him, so I moved on.  Today, my friend told me that the woman couldn't adopt because she didn't have a fenced in yard.

Well, now I really want him! He's housebroken and used to being home alone, is great with kids and other dogs (we already have a teddy bear).  I just want to give him a good life for the rest of his life.

My mom thinks I'm crazy to consider it with 1 year old twins, and a new store opening- but really I think I have to have him!

Opinions?!?!?

  • We have 5 dogs (runs in to closet to avoid flaming).

I, obviously, LOVE dogs. I think they bring such joy to our kids. I also like that because they grew up with them they are not afraid of dogs like our neighbors son. Not that it's a bad thing....but I'm glad we can avoid one fear.

  • We have 2 dogs (ok, I guess that's obvious with my bump name but whatever) and I honestly think they are easier now that we have two because they keep each other company and play with each other etc..  Personally, I didn't find 2 dogs to be anymore work than 1 because all of the things you need to do for a dog, you already do for the other one anyway.

You're such a twin mom! lol

No really, I agree, we had what we got what we thought was a beagle puppy right before I got pregnant but she turned out be a *** hound and we didn't have the time to run her 2 times day once the boys were born.  She went nutty and started destroying things- it was awful, but we were able to find her a home in the country with a retired man who treats her like a princess!  All that to say, 2 was so nice- they played together, napped together, etc...

  • We've got two 90lb Labs and if DH would let me, I would have a whole herd of them, lol. I don't think you are crazy, but I would introduce him to the other dog and maybe do a trial run for a few days first to make sure he will be a good fit for your family.

Haha!  Yeah, I guess I'm already of the mind set, "what's the big deal of one more of any living being?!"  Wink  What's funny is that my dogs both kind of look alike, which is a total coincidence.  They were both rescues and we got them at completely different times and it just happened that they looked kind of similar.  Before I was even pregnant, I would be out walking the dogs and people always said "oh look, twin dogs!  Are they related?" and when I would say no, they would say "are you sure??" and then ask a million other questions.  I still get asked that every now and then so now I have to dodge questions from strangers about my twin babies AND my "twin dogs", ha!  Also, both of my dogs are boys - I always joke now that I should have gotten a girl dog so I would have at least one other girl in the house. :)

    enjoy your new dog, G!

  • huh? just saw that it took out the type of dog she was, rhymes with boon but starts with a c!

    Anywho

  • I think you should go for it. We're thinking of adopting a dog to keep our dog company since she gets a little neglected. Sad
Mom to six awesome kids - Levi is 12, Landen is 8, Gabrielle is 6, Lucas is 3, and Oliver and Samuel are 2 years old. Love my crew. Baby Birthday Ticker TickerBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • As long as he fits your family, I would say go for it! Going from one dog to two dogs isn't too much more work, and with it being 8 years old, you won't have to worry about potty training or chewing, which is really nice.

  • I'm in the minority, but I think I would lose my freaking mind if we got another dog. But, we're expecting a baby in the fall, have 2 boys that are into everything, and an INSANE sheltie who barks his head off, sheds like crazy and pretty much drives me nuts. DH mentioned getting another dog the other day, and I told him that if we get another dog, we have to get rid of a kid. (KIDDING OF COURSE). Smile

I'm just not at a place in my life right now where I could tolerate another dog. And I am a huge dog lover and before they boys were born, my dog was my baby. Poor puppy!

All. The. Time. People think that because we have 5 they can say whatever they want (sound familiar? Just like with twins etc). More so along the lines of "You're CRAZY!" "You have more dogs than kids!" etc. etc. It gets old, but I love them.
