Crib???

So I had posted earlier about DS sleeping in his bassinet last night, which we will try again tonight, but it got me thinking when I saw the transition to crib post from Riley. DS sleeps tons each night, enough that he probably should be in his crib and not in our room, but we keep him in our room every night anyway. Initially this started because I was BF'ing and it was more convenient, but since he doesn't nurse at all in the middle of the night and hasn't minus like one-two odd days for a month, we just kept having him in our room because we don't have a monitor yet. I know I need to go get a monitor at some point soon- because I'm always having to be in the same room with DS unless Dh is home, but I really don't want him to be sleeping in his room yet and think that maybe not having a monitor is my excuse? Anyone else not ready for LO to be in their own room yet too?

Re: Crib???

  • the AAP actually recommends having babies in your room near the mother till six months of age until they are out of the danger zone of sids.  I had my older daughter in her cradle in my room until three months when she started rolling over and then I slept on a twin mattress until she was six months in her room while she slept in her crib.  That might sound excessive but I read a lot of research and most said that it is best to have the mother in close proximity till six months.  A monitor does not necessarily take the place of a mother's instinct with the baby close by.  Just telling you what my research said :)

  • Isaac will be going to his crib when his sleeping habits get better. Last night he slept from 11pm-4am and then from 4am- 7am(had to wake him up for his baptism so who knows how late he would have slept if I let him). If he continues to sleep like that he will go into his bed.

I feel like DH and I need our room back. Granted, I haven't been cleared for intercourse yet and have quite a few weeks ahead of me still so we may just wait to move him until that point even if his sleeping habits have improved.

  • I totally wasn't ready to move LO to his own room!  Before LO arrived I had planned to keep him in his room from day 1.  Then he was born a month early and was so teeny and was eating every 90mins-2hours.  I was way too tired and nervous to have him away from me.  But everything I've read says that you can't spoil them the first 3 mths, but after 3 mths they start to be so much more aware of their surroundings, making the crib transition more of a challenge.  I really wanted to make the transition as soon as possible, and before 3 mths, so it would be easier for LO and therefore easier for me too.  We finally just bit the bullet and made the switch.  We did it over the weekend in case he screamed the entire time and kept us up all night, but it actually went so much better then I had expected.

I also should tell you that we have an Angelcare AND a video monitor!  Paranoid much!?!?  But it does make me feel so much better having him away from me when I know he's definitely okay.

You can start by just having LO in the crib once in a while.  DH used to take him into his crib and read him stories just to get him used to it.  I think that helped, maybe us more then him, but still.

I think it's most important to do what you feel is best.  Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  • We're starting the crib again this week.  She actually slept in it pretty well during the first 2 weeks then all of a sudden she freaked on us.  We've had her in the PNP bassinet in our room since then.  However, she's gotten a little too long for this bassinet.  Her head and toes are just touching the edges of it, so she's definitely about to outgrow it.

We have the Summer video monitor camera mounted above her crib.  Love it.

  • Brayson is 7 weeks today and I'm not ready to move him, although I would love too. He is a noisy sleeper so I don't get much sleep. But he is still up every 3 hours so I'm not moving him until he sleeps longer in between. Like pp, I'm a bit lazy, haha.
