If you've done a form of CIO for sleep training

Does your LO still cry when you put them down? We started sleep training a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to be getting better but she still wakes up at least once a night crying. Last week when we put her down she usually cried for about 5min before she fell asleep. Well, we were on vacation this weekend and now she is all screwed up and going on 20 min of crying right now. Does your LO get all thrown off after vacation? I don't want to go through the sleep training again every time we go somewhere. I'm feeling really guilty right now for letting her cry so much. :(

Any suggestions? We tried the NCSS with absolutely no success.

  • I'm just curious was your vacation bedtime routine the same as the one you had at home? I'm out of town now and we are sharing a bed and I am terrified that her bedtime will be thrown off once we get home. You may have to go through the process all over again. Hopefully it will go quicker (as far as days) since your LO has already been through it once already. GL

  • Yep, vacation can be a big upheaval to sleep training. It does get better, and each time there is a real disruption it goes a little faster. Even after we officially sleep trained and things were going well there were nights that she had some issues. I tried to think of it as, like all of us, sometimes we have a harder time falling asleep. They just make it known, a lot louder than we do. Ha!

Hang in there, and just be consistent.

  • Thanks, it just breaks my heart to hear her cry so hard. Doesn't help that my MIL made me feel guilty last week for letting her CIO.

We tried to keep the routine the same but the first night we got there later than planned so it was later going down. We also didn't let her cry too much because we were in a hotel and I felt bad so she ended up in bed with us.

  • I agree with PP just stay consistent and most often it takes less days to get back on track. I know its difficult but shrug off what others say ... you know your child best.

  • Being somewhere unfamiliar always bugs DS.  He cried more when we were at the hotel, and he slept with us more (thank goodness for the huge bed), but he went back to normal when we got back home.  He did cry for several months after we sleeptrained when putting him down for the night.  But now he hardly ever cries when we put him down, and when he does, it's rarely for more than 5 min.  It might take a few more days, but she'll get used to the routine again.  Vacation alway screws it up!
