HELP! Diaper Rash from He*l!!

Please help. Isabel, our 8 month old, has the diaper rash from heck! During one diaper change a week and a half ago, she was clean and smooth. An hour later, during another diaper change we found her diaper area was incredibly red! Over the next 24 hrs despite frequent changes and desitin, she developed red sores! We've taken her to the pedi twice and they don't think it's a yeast infection. Well, she developed full body hives last week, but the diaper rash seemed to be improving. Back to the pedi we went and all they could recommend was benedryl, air drying, freq. diaper changes - the usual. Well, now hives are better, but diaper rash is back with a vengeance.

she's been on enfamil with ara and dha since she was 6 months without a problem. We've advanced her diet to some table foods - veggies, chicken, and stage 3 gerbers. She poops 4-6 times a day and it's always wet to pastey. We go back to the doctor on Monday if no improvement. What can we do??? Please tell me we are not alone! She's in so much pain every time she pees and we have to change her!

HELP!

Re: HELP! Diaper Rash from He*l!!

  • She is in pain when she pees? From the rash or something else? Could she have a bladder infection? Ask the pedi if you should increase solids because DS doesn't poop that much anymore. He is at once a day...I am so sorry your little angel is going through this. I hope you find a solution.

Oh, have you tried an Eveno bath?

  • it sounds like a yeast infection. DS is battling it right now. We've been trying to keep it dry (no diaper at night) and using powder instead of desitin which seems to keep it dryer better. Someone at daycare today recommended using burnt flour (put a handful of flour in an ungreased pan and brown on low until it smells toasted and is brown). You then use it like baby powder. I'm a pediatrician and have never heard of this, but I'm almost willing to try anything right now and we haven't been dealing with it for half as long as you have!
  • Have you changed the brand of diaper that you use?  We can't use Pampers on Lauren so I was just wondering if she is having an allergic reaction to the diapers.  We had a similar situation and the rash would come and go since she was wearing Huggies and was wearing pampers at home. Once I figured out it was the diapers it cleared up fairly quickly.  I have used a mixture of water, tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar too but it will burn like the dickens if she has any open sores.
  • I'd call the pedi to make sure there aren't other issues here.

However, Ben had a wicked diaper rash from teething.  I tried the following diaper cremes: California Baby, Earth's Best, Bert's Bees and A&D - none of them worked.  The one thing that finally got rid of it is Triple Paste.  GL!

  • Definetly definetly definetly give your pedi a call... it could be a yeast infection.

If it isn't there is a cream called Mustela Selactiv you can get at BRU or diapers.com and it is miraculous.  Harmon got bad rash b/c of teething diarhea.  Even the perscription stuff didn't work.  But this Mustela did!!!!!  So worth it.  Also his rear was so raw the diaper rash cream wouldn't stick to his bum... it was so sad!  So after we applied cream we dusted his bum w/baby powder and that was the key to keep the rash medicine where it needed to be.  Also naked baby time is the bomb for tough tooshies.

Now we use Balmex every diaper change and that has prevented a reoocurance.

  • I'm sorry that you have to deal with this.  Poor baby and Poor you, too.  DD had diaper rash constantly for almost the first 2 years.  The things that she got the most help from are Butt paste and a mix of Maalox and aquaphor.  The maalox aquaphor is something they use  for nicu babies at the hospital where I was a pharmacy tech.

to make the maalox aquaphor, take equal parts, say, 1/4 cup each and mix them in a microwave safe ziploc bag.  squish them together for a while then microwave it for 8 seconds and mix some more.  you should get a smooth white paste.  put it in an airtight container and use like any diaper cream.  be sure to get plain old mint maalox as regular as they come.

  • My DD had a bad yeast infection and that's what it sounds like.  My dr had me use the following ointment:

    - 1 tube desitin creamy, 1 tube A&D ointment and 3 tablespoons generic yeast infection cream (the over the counter stuff).  Mix all together in a tupperware and apply each time you change the diaper.

This stuff was awesome!!!  My DD got another diaper rash about 4 months later and I called the dr and asked if I should use it again (I wasn't sure if it was a yeast infection again), and she said to go ahead and use that mixture.  It's safe to use.  She said to use it anytime my DD might need it.

  • I forgot to mention that if it's yeast, you can try any over the counter fungal cream like Lotrimin AF (athlete's foot section) or a vaginal yeast infection cream. If it's not a yeast infection, there's a cream that I often prescribe that you can make at home. It's a even mixture of Benadryl cream, Maalox, and Desitin. That often helps.
  • I took my son in for a diaper rash, they shouldn't make you feel bad at all. Sometimes they just need to see it, you know?

What worked for us was hydrocortizone then triple paste on top. Helped within a day.

  • There is a zinc paste that you can order from the pharmacies. You don't need a Rx, but yet you can't buy it over the counter. Call around and ask. They use it in hospitals. DS was having a similar issue with an ongoing diaper rash but it was from teething. He had diarreah for a month strait and it was driving me nutz. We'd use the paste and it'd go away and come back every day. It was like one diaper per day flared him up then he'd be fine through a few and then flare up again every single day we went through this. However if the zinc cream isn't working at all try the Lotramin(sp?) there is a generic Target brand we used when DS had a yeast infection and it cleared it up immediatly. So, that's my advise, try a higher concentrate zinc paste and the Lotramin or try another Pedi if possible since from your post, yours doesn't seem very helpful. Oh, and we used the hair dryer to dry him at every diaper change. My sister thought I was nutz, but my pedi had recommended it and DS loved it.
