Do I need a new Car Seat?

We got in a minor accident the other day. We were rear ended. Nothing too big, and all we need is a new bumper. I heard somewhere that when you get in an accident you need a new carseat but I wasn't sure. I asked the insurance company and they said , "If you feel like you need one, then get one". I don't want to over look it if getting one is really necessary. Ours wasn't cheap (Britax Advocate) but I will get one if it is necessary. What are you thoughts? What did/would you do?

  • Most insurance companies will pay for a replacement.

It's not worth a gamble on my kid's life.  I'd get a new seat.

  • If insurance will cover it, get a new one. Better safe than sorry.
  • This just happened to me too...I have a Britax and the manual says you don't need to replace after a minor accident and explains what qualifies as minor--airbags don't deploy, car is driveable, no injuries and one other thing I can't remember

This is in my Britax manual, also. I wouldn't replace it.

This. We have Britax too. Now, in a more serious crash, absolutely replace it.

This.  I have a friend who was in multiple minor car accidents (less than 10 mph) and the insurance wouldn't replace the car seat because none of the accidents met this criteria.  I would replace it if insurance covers it though.

  • Replacing a car seat after any accident is the general rule.  Better safe then sorry.

This.  If your insurance will cover the entire cost what will it hurt?  It won't come out of your bank acct.  If they refuse and you were the one that got hit you could also see if the other driver's insurance will cover the cost.  When we got into a minor accident last summer the other driver's insurance told us they will cover the cost if our insurance didn't.

Mine said that too. That being said, if the other person were at fault I'd consider letting their insurance cover it

  • Nope, not after a minor accident like that.  Here is a great site to use to deceide if you need a new one...

  • i'm a little paranoid so i would want it replaced but i definitely would try to get the other person's insurance to pay for it since they were at fault.
