high temp for 3 days but no fever. should i worry

DD was sent home from daycare friday, they said she didnt eat lunch so they took her temp, it was 99.7, then after a very short nap they took her temp again and it was 101.6. DH got her home and she seemed fine. I got home a couple hours later, took her temp and it was 99.7. Has been 99.7 since then. She has been crabby but doesnt seem to be sick. Her eyes were gunky friday night so I gave her some old pink eye drops i had, her eyes seem fine . Should I be worried about her temp staying at 99.7? When should I worry?

  • You've just befuddled me.  I always thought high temp = fever

  • What is her normal temp?? I wouldn't do anything unless it was over 101 or she starts acting strange. Probably just her body's natural immune response fighting off something.

  • I don't really consider 99.7 much of a fever. For me, high fever is above 103. So no, I wouldn't be worried about a temp staying at 99.7. But if she continues to have gunky eyes, I'd bring her in for that.

I would be less worried about the low grade fever and more worried about the "old pink eye drops" you gave her.

Pink eye is highly contagious and is usually viral. If you got it on the bottle when you used it  you could give it to her. Throw them away!

Wow, I somehow missed the part about the old pink eye drops. That was a really dangerous thing to do....

  • Not sure about "high temp for 3 daysbut no fever". I thought a high temp was a fever. Never the less, Bear had a high temp (99-101) for 4 days that I assumed was from teething. Howver, a day later a rash appeared on his chest, trunk and back. Roseola is was.

  • I understand about the drops. The are not expired and the dropper never touched her eye or anything. I spend $115 for the stupid things so I wanted to use it all up
  • If its persistent then I would call the doctor.  I wouldn't say its serious enough to page a doctor on off hours but call the office when they are in.  It doesn't hurt to run it past them and see what they suggest.  It could be some type of infection (ear maybe?) and that's why she's crabby.

Are they prescription? I wouldn't use an adult medication, especially if it requires a prescription, on a toddler. At least not without consulting your pediatrician.

  • Temps in the 99 range lead me to believe she is just working on a cold virus. Just watch her. And those temps, even the 101, isnt considered "high" in the pediatric world. Temps to worry about are 103 or greater that don't come down with Tylenol or motrin. I hope the pink eye drops were not adult prescription drops. Probably was way too much medicine dose for a toddler and people in general should not share prescriptions regardless of the cost. It's a safety reason.

My DD just had this last month as well. It was terrible. The fever she didn't seem to mind and it lasted for 3 days then went away. The rash was the worst part for her..she was extremely itchy all over her body.

  • If you're taking the temp rectally then 99.7 is a normal rectal temp. Under the arm, it's considered a low grade fever. Gunky eyes can be a symptom of everything from allergies to an ear infection. I'd say, wait a couple days and see what happens. If she continues to be fussy, runs an actual fever (over 101) or seems to be tugging on her ear, etc. then take her into the doctor.
