Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

potty training question

With all the stressful things going on this week, Thomas decided to be very nice and pee on the potty today :) We've had it around the house for over a month now, and he'd sit on it clothed every once in a while.

Since we just moved into our new house (about 2 weeks ago) and he's already been adjusting to having his own room for the first time, I was going to hold off on potty training for a while. Yesterday though, he decided that he really wanted to try. He sat on the potty seat (on the big toilet seat) for about 15 minutes. This morning, he kept going into the bathroom again, so I put him on it. He's also been saying "poopy" every time he has a dirty diaper.

He peed!! It was only a little, but I was still so impressed that he did it.

Now, I don't know how to keep this going; Do I put him on every few hours? wait until he shows interest again? overall I'm just excited

  • My daughter went through a phase where she loved sitting on the potty (and was actually doing quite well).  Then all of a sudden she didn't want to do it.  I held off (she was 18 months at the time).  She still would tell me when she pooped and would take her diaper off when she was wet.  I just think she wasn't ready for the full "responsibility" of going on the potty every time.

We started back up and I think this is it.  She now comes to get me when she needs to go.  5 days ago I would remind her every so often then she just took off.  The last 2 days she had 1 accident and today she had none, not even during her nap.  Night time is another thing though since she still wakes up wet.

I would go ahead and let him go as he asks and maybe before/after meals and nap time.  I wouldn't push it with doing it every so often just yet. After a little while just follow his cues.  If you think he is ready then start taking him every 30 minutes.  If he rebels then just wait it out a little longer.
