2nd Trimester

gender?

how many weeks can you find out the babys gender?

Im really hoping for a girl and am really impatient. I live in El Salvador so although I do have dr appointments and have had one scan - I know other people as far along as I am go for way more appointments.

Im only being sent for another scan in may when I will be about 22 weeks, should I not pay attention and just go earlier to find out babys gender? :-p

Re: gender?

  • Many, many doctors only do one scan in an entire pregnancy.  There is often no need for more.  So it's not unusual that you are only having the 2.  To get a semi-accurate guess at the sex, you need to be at least 18 weeks.  Anything earlier than that is just a guess.

  • Im 18 weeks next week

Ive just seen it on loads of peoples pages on here that they know the gender when theyre not that far along

  • I found out the gender in my 20th week, and I know someone else who found out in their 19th. In all I'll only receive 3 ultrasounds, and the 2nd was when we found out the gender.

I know how hard it is to wait it out but I think the further along you are the better the odds that they get the gender right. Although I do think having you wait until 22 weeks is a bit much. Maybe you can reschedule it to 20 weeks??

    Good luck!

  • A friend of mine found out her 17th week. I have a scan on the first day of my 18th, and the tech said I'd find out then. :)

  • Hi there,

Most anatomy ultrasounds take place somewhere around 20 weeks & that's when the dr asks if you want to know the gender.  Our anatomy U/S is going to be at 19 weeks.

The reason people find out the gender at 20 weeks is only because that's when the anatomy U/S is scheduled & if you choose to have an "unnecessary" U/S before that, insurance would probably not cover it.  Technically you could find out a few weeks before that.

There are places in the U.S. that will do ultrasounds for pregnant women at a very low price ($40), so you can find out the gender before the doctor's 20 week U/S.  They say that they can reveal the gender anytime after 15 weeks.  I don't know if they have these places in El Salvador, though.

  • You can definitely find out this early! I found out at my OB with DS that he was a boy at 17 weeks. It was very obvious!
