Baby Names

Alicia?

Do you pronounce it ah-LEE-shah or ah-LEE-see-ah? I kind of like it pronounced the second way but I know it's probably not the norm.

Also, do you find the name nice, dated, ugly?

We've narrowed down a few names but I can't help but continue the search. I'm watching Confessions of a Shopaholic and a character is named Alicia (pronounced ah-LEE-shah) so I thought I would try it out.

Thoughts? Thanks :)

  • I say Ah-lee-sha.
  • ah-LEE-shah - and I think it's dated, but don't hate it.

  • Blech.  The child will be correcting people on how to say spell (Elicia) her name for life.  NMS.

I doubt it, since Alicia is by far the more common spelling...I've never met or heard of an Elicia, and according to SSA while Alicia's been in the top 200-300 for the last ten years, Elicia hasn't even rated in the top 1000.

    This.

I prefer the A-LEE-see-ah pronunciation better.  Maybe because I went to school with 2 girls who used this version. I do think the A-LEE-shah version is more common though.

  • Where I live, it's pronounced a-LEE-thee-a, but where I'm from, most pronounce it a-LEE-sha, but some are a-LEE-see-a. I know an Olesia (pronounced o-LEE-see-a) which I think is really pretty, but I don't really care for Alicia in any pronunciation.
  • One of the kids I nanny for is named Alicia pronounced Uh-Lee-See-Uh. She does get called Uh-Lee-Sha sometimes though. There's also another Uh-Lee-See-Uh in her class but I don't know how it is spelled.
  • i pronounce Alicia - ah-LEE-shah

    and Alisia - ah-LEE-see-ah

  • My name, spelling and all! Mine is pronounced Uh-lee-sha. Most people get it correct, but there are a few who mis-pronounce it Uh-lee-see-Uh and my aunt was forever calling me Uh-lish-uh. I've had a handful of people mistakenly call me Alice or Alise. I've only met 2 others in 38 years, so it's not common. ETA: I love my name; the only thing I didn't like about it growing up was that it was so hard to find stuff with my name on it.
