Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Hunger Strike

My DD hasnt been eating her solids since Thursday now. She throws it on the floor, turns her head away and flat our refuses! She doesnt seem sick besides a little runny nose. Could it be illness or attitude? I am at a loss.

Re: Hunger Strike

  • is she teething?  is she eating anything??  i would be force feeding if she hasn't eaten solids in 3 days.  have you tried letting her have her own spoon or fork?

  • She is teething, but has been for a while. Yes we give her a fork and spoon at every meal. I cant force feed her she shuts her mouth. When I do get a bite in she usually spits it out. She is drinking her milk. I am thinking about getting some carnation instant breakfast. If she had a sore throat would I know? Any signs?

  • I would keep offering solids, try to get more milk in her and call the doc if it lasts longer than a week. Sounds like teething though. How does she do with soft foods, yogurt, etc?

You should not force feed your child under any circumstances.  Toddlers will not starve themselves.  She will make up missed calories later in the week.

I have a picky eater who refuses food randomly all the time.  She is healthy and growing fine.  Have you tried making a smoothie?  Baby food, water and a little bit of juice works for us.  Good luck and don't worry!

  • DS does this every few months. The first time it happened I was all freaked out since he wasn't eating. I just kept offering him some food after a few days or a week or so he started eating like a mad man. We are currently in a hunger strike he just eats a few bites here and there when he typically cleans his plate and wants more. They won't starve themselves.

force feeding her meaning i would be feeding her yogurt, cereal, fruit and whatever else she let me put in her mouth along with pushing fluids. i see nothing wrong with this.   if she isn't doesn't eat for days in a row i would have called the Dr by now for suggestions.
