Baby Names

Harrison?

Harrison is a major family name in my husband's family and I'm thinking I like it for a first name for a boy... I just hope people won't call him Harry as a nn...

What do you think of Harrison James?

Re: Harrison?

  • I like Harrison.  It has gotten popular lately (I know 2 babies with this name) but it is one of my favorite "surname names".

Fwiw, I think Harry is a very natural nickname for Harrison (and I think it's cute!).  If you hate it, I would probably think of a different name.

  • Harrison is my nephew's name, he also has a "J" mn.  If you don't like Harry, then only call him Harrison (or some other unrelated name you come up with).  Most people will call him what you call him.
  • love it. my cousin is harrison and only his baby sister calls him harry. everyone else uses harrison.

  • Harrison James sounds good. If anyone tries to call him "Harry" just respond "No, its just Harrison". Agree with PP, most people will probably call LO whatever you call them. GL

  • I also like the name Harrison, but don't like Harry. Just NMS.

  • I know a 4yo Harrison.  He has never been called Harry.  As PP said call him what you want him called and gently correct nayone who doesn't use the correct name.

This, all of this. I like Harrison, and I think if you call him Harrison and not Harry, it will be Harrison. You can gently correct people if they do try to call him Harry.

  • I think it's a very nice name combo but you can't control what other people call your kid. That being said, I don't think Harry is a nickname that (at least kids) would think to call him these days.
  • By best friend has a Harrison James, he's 3.  No one calls him anything but Harrison, but they had figured that if they use a nickname in the future at all, they would go with Harris instead of Harry.  But so far, they've just stuck to Harrison.  Another thing: people seemto think Harrison is a really "new" name not only do I have a Harrison in my family tree, I also graduated high school with not one but two Harrisons.  G/L deciding!
  • I love the name Harrison.  I've found if you just keep repeating Harrison all the time others will follow your lead.

  • Harrison is NMS.  However, if it's a family name and important to you, use it.  You can't control what other ppl call your child, but if you're consistent about calling him Harrison, other ppl tend to follow.

    I loooove James.

  • I don't really like it, but I'm not a big fan of using common surnames as first names.

  • My grandfather is Harrison James (FN-LN), but everyone calls him Harry.

Just to be honest, once kids start going to school, most 3-syllable first names I know inevitably get shortened to a nn. My brother prefers his whole name, and that is all our family has ever called him.  However, the rest of the world shortened it to a nn no matter how many times we corrected them.  If you hate the nn, I would avoid it.

  • I like it!
  • I was a nanny for years for a boy named Harrison. You can't not call him Harry. Harrison is too long, and friends will automatically shorten it. He was only seven, but he had zero luck in requesting that friends and family call him by his full name. I suggested he come up with a new nickname for himself, and he began requesting people call him "Zero". It was so funny! Kids are creative. Come up with a nickname before he does if you don't like Harry!
