2nd Trimester

When did GERD end?

For those of you who have had GERD in your first trimester, did it end in the second trimester? I'm on Prilosec OTC right now and it's helped a graet deal but I still have very uncomfortable upset stomach feelings and burping. I have already done everything I could to control it (sleeping elevated, eating small meals that are not acidic)  I go from feeling okay to feelings of misery. I would love to know if it ended for you. The midwife told me it could end around week 14-16 but I may have it the entire pregnancy. That would be a nightmare for me.

Thanks! I'd love to know if GERD ended at some point for you?

Re: When did GERD end?

  • I feel your pain!!  I had it starting at week 6.  Started to get a little reprieve at about 24 weeks but it has been back the past few days.  I started taking papaya enzyme chewables a few weeks ago and I think they are really helping. :)  Good luck!

  • Thank you for the replies. I suspect that this will just stick around and I'll have to cope with it. The Prilosec seems to be working but I still have very uncomfortable burping. Once a day, I'll feel sick to my stomach out of no where and I'll have to go to the bathroom - I'll do an uncontrollable dry heaving thing and it's very violent but all that comes up is acid it looks like and a bit of bile. Does that sound familiar?
  • I had GERD for 1 1/2 yrs before the pregnancy! Actually the pregnancy so far has made it feel slightly better. Odd I know. Anyways I'm hoping it just continues to get better and goes away after! I hate that bloated burpy acidy feeling after I eat :( I feel your pain!

Yes. Exactly. Early on I had normal "m/s", but as time progressed, it got to be this gross wretching and vomiting of this dark brown acidic slime, that, according to my research, is bile. It's horrible and tastes like battery acid.

Even now, with the Protonix, I will be awakened at night by acid coming into my throat and mouth, choking me, if I drink too much water while laying down/before laying down. It's horrible.

  • Gummibear,

So after all that, you're on your 2nd pregnancy now? :) I'm really feeling sad right now. If it continues this way, I'm not sure...I'm almost positive I don't think I could go through this again and I have always wanted to have more children. I meet with the GI doctor next week and I hope he can prescribe something that will soothe both the chest pain and burping bloat. Do you ever feel "normal"? Does the Protonix take care of most of your uncomfortable symptoms?

  • Yes! The Protonix makes me feel normal to the point that I sometimes forget I am pregnant. I get the acid in my throat at night if I drink too much water while in bed (I tend to chug water all night) but if I am careful not to drink too much, it is not nearly as bad. Also, if it does happen, Tums do the trick.

Protonix is my miracle drug :)
