I'm certain Callie has one, but i'd love to find out more from people dealing with this in their toddlers. What were their symptoms and when did they present themselves? How did you get a diagnosis? What's a typical daily menu for your LO? Can they do cheese and yogurt? Is your whole family dairy free? Thanks!
Re: Any LOs with a dairy allergy?
My son has Dairy, Soy, Egg, Peanut allergy (egg and peanut is severe)
What were tgeir symptoms - when i BF him, he got major rash (blisters and all) b/c i ate the things he was allergic to. His skin cleared up when i removed these things from my diet
and when did they present themselves? when he was about 3 months old
How dud you get a diagnosis? He touched a piece of egg and when into a anaphylaxis and was rushed to the ER
Whats a typical daily menu for your LO? Breakfast - Oatmeal with flaxseed meal... Lunch - almond butter and jelly on pizza dough... Dinner - Pasta with rice cheese... Snack "So delicious yogurt"
Can they do cheese and yogurt? no. But a lot of stores sell these delicious coconut yogurts (soy and dairy free) . They also make ice cream.
Is your whole family dairy free? At home, yes.. when we're at work, no. We pretty much made our entire house allergy free. No one misses it.
If your LO has a dairy allergy, check for a soy allergy also. 50% of kids allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.
What makes you think your LO has a dairy allergy?
Oy, I wrote that post from my iphone. So many typos! I edited it=) Anyway, she's been dealing with TERRIBLE constipation since she was about 9 months old(when we completely weaned from nursing). She will go several days between bm's and when she has them, they are huge, painful poops. They're so bad that she screams, cries, writhes in pain, shakes and sweats. It's so sad:( There's nothing to be done until she passes it. I've brought this up at every.single.appointment since the first time and the doctor just chalks it up to diet and tells me to give her more fiber. Also, seemingly unrelated, she never slept through the night. Even at 20 months, she was still waking about four hours after her bedtime bottle and I'd give her another. She won't drink milk from a cup, so we thought it was important to keep giving it to her however she'd drink it. Duh.
After a recent, really painful episode I did some researching and discovered that too much full-fat dairy is a cause of sever constipation. She doesn't get more than is recommended but I decided to try eliminating the milk first and switched her to soy. Within 24 hours, she was finally regular. She also dropped that middle-of-the-night bottle.
Last night, I gave her whole milk and surprise, surprise! She woke up four hours later, crying in pain, bloated, cramping and passing really stinky gas. When I got her dressed this morning, she had hives all over her torso:( So, I'm guessing it's an allergy? I'm just hoping the doctor will finally take me seriously on this and get her tested.

It's not a severe allergy but it will give her diarrhea. We THINK she is starting to grow out of it. She drinks soy milk or cocunut milk and we substitute smart balance for butter (you have to look on the back of the smart balance to make sure it's the one that's dairy free). Also, they make soy cheese slices and she loves those. Soy Yo Baby yogurt, too.
We usually just separate things before we add in any dairy and then sometimes have to add in extra stuff for her, depends what the meal is.
We found out she had this allergy because she got C. Diff from diarrhea that lasted awhile and wasn't resolving itself, despite going to the Dr. and doing a broad scope antibiotic for possible infection. The antibiotic actually made the C Diff worse.
Now, we give her probiotics (culturelle kids and florastor kids) and hope that C Diff never happens again (she was hospitalized).
They also make an almond milk that is really really tastey, and rice milk to mix things up.
DS broke out in hives immediately the first time he had baby yogurt. We tried cheese- same reaction. Pedi asked us to go to the allergist, where a skin test confirmed a dairy allergy. He's fine with buttermilk, though, and I have no idea why- he can eat buttermilk pancakes and waffles all day long and he's happy and hive-free!
At home, we make all meals dairy-free, or add dairy after DS gets his portion, like cheese on a casserole, though we're doing a lot less of this than we used to. Breakfast is usually waffles, scrambled eggs, or oatmeal with cinnamon with cut up fruit on the side. Lunch is leftovers or lunch meat and frozen veggies. Dinner is whatever we're having. Honestly, it's probably a good thing we've gone dairy-free.
DD is allergic to Dairy, Egg, Wheat, Soy, Peanut... and a few others...
Her dairy allergy didn't present until she was about 9 months old, after she had previously been tested for it and came back negative. Then one morning I gave her some baby yogurt and she started going into anaphylactic shock, as well as breaking out in hives. After a trip to the ER and then our allergist, we re-tested for Dairy and she tested positive.
I try to make our meals dairy-free and then give her a portion. If I can't make something dairy-free, then she gets something else. We're not keeping the household dairy, egg, wheat, soy and peanut free because it's simply too much to handle. Her diet is pretty limited as it is. She gets a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, as well as coconut yogurt, brown rice pasta...
We also use Neocate Jr. because all the milk/soy milk alternatives don't have the nutritional value that she really needs right now.
DD is definitely allergic to dairy and eggs (eggs is severe). She got hives on her face/neck from yogurt/cheese around 8 months when we introduced it. We still eat dairy and eggs (DH and I). A lot of kids with dairy allergy can eat baked goods with dairy, which helps a lot. DD usually has a muffin and fruit for breakfast, tofu or meat with veggies and a carb for lunch, soy yogurt or cereal bars for snacks, whatever we eat for dinner. She drinks soy milk - our pedi said rice milk doesn't have the right nutrients and we are avoiding nut milks until she is a bit older. We did a blood test a month ago and she tested also positive for peanut and wheat, but we haven't done the skin prick test yet. She eats wheat all the time so I don't think that one was right.
If your daughter has an gastrointestinal reaction to milk and can eat yogurt/cheese, it might actually be lactose intolerance. Have you tried the Lactaid milk?
