ohhh...the guilt:(

Callie has had terrible constipation for the past year. Like, huge, hard, impacted bm's that make her cry, sweat and shake from the pain of passing them:( she's also rarely ever slept through the night, waking 2-4 hours after her previous bottle. Recently, we switched her to soy to see if that helped and it made a HUGE difference. Last night, i gave her whole milk and surprise, surprise! Woke up four hours later with revolting gas, bloating and abdomimal pain. When i got her undressed this morning, she had a rash on her torso. Apparently she has a milk allergy:( nice to know after over a year of milke-based formula and whole milk. I've brought this up at every.single.appointment and always been told to push fiber. The rash is a new symptom so hopefully they take me seriously now. Ffs.

  • Don't feel guilty (I know, it's what us moms do). But guilt will get you nowhere--continue the soy milk and enjoy the new happy, regular Callie :)

    Can she do other dairy?

  • I'm so sorry, purrf!  I hate that you and she have been dealing with that.

Both of my kids have had milk protein issues, but Jackson grew out of his.  I suspect Scarlett will do the same, but I don't know yet.

FWIW, both of them had the symptom of ridiculous constipation.  I didn't ever post about it much here, but I found that constipation doesn't get NEAR the attention from doctors that bloody stools or loose stools do.  I was actually really surprised when constipation was listed in the materials I got from our doctor about formula/food allergies.  Pleasantly surprised, because it took a lot of research for me to discover that with Jackson.

I'll see if I can dig up some of that info I found for you so you can show it to the doctor.  Our pedi with Jackson was really dismissive of his constipation.

  • Thanks, eclaires! That would be great:) Thank-you, too, r9 and Ghm:) ghm, she can do cheese and yogurt, which is why i always assumed it was lactose sensitivity. Eclaires, can Jackson handle cheese and yogurt or is his a complete allergy?

  • He could handle cheese and yogurt, and he actually drinks regular milk now.  He probably grew out of it around a year, I guess?  He loves milk and drinks a ton of it and no longer has any reactions.  His official diagnosis was a milk protein sensitivity, which is also Scarlett's diagnosis currently, along with reflux/Infant GERD.

We tried cheese and yogurt with him shortly before a year and he did fine.  Then we tried milk around the time he was a year old, expecting him to not tolerate it well.  But, he did and was fine.  I do think part of what helped him grow out of it (at least according to our current pedi) is that his body was not fighting the milk protein after we figured it out.  I think sometimes the continued exposure can make it worse (not to make you feel badly AT ALL, just that's what I've heard).

  • My DD had a milk intolerence.  It sounds similar to what Callie has.  Took a long time to figure it out b/c she never took a bottle so I nursed her for a year.  We figured it out when she got a wicked rash after switching her to milk at a year and had her tested.

Good thing is it is not an allergy- not life threatening, and often they outgrow it.  DD could do hard cheeses, and yogurt.  She has mostly outgrown it now, although she is not a huge milk fan.  Her rash will flair up if she overdoes dairy, ice cream seems to set it off, but I haven't seen it in a while.

Good luck, hope things get better for DD.
