So my induction is scheduled for Monday and at my appointment, my Dr mentioned a research study that she is helping conduct. She said that Pitocin (sp?) can have really bad side-effects, not common but can happen. So they are researching wether or not women should stay on Pitocin throughout the whole labor.
They believe that a woman's body should be able to continue to progress without medication once in active labor. In order to test this, they would start me on Pitocin and once I'm in active labor they would stop administering it and a new bag of medication (Pit or Placebo) would be sent up from the pharmacy and started. Neither the Drs nor I would know which was hung until after the baby was delivered. They will watch what my body does, either continue to labor on its own or stop.
I don't really see the harm in participating but I've never had a baby before either and I don't know what to expect. I can stop participating in the study any time if I no longer feel comfortable.
What would you ladies do if given the opportunity?
Re: Induction Study Advice
Since there is no major difference between what you planned to do and this (and it is not like they are giving you a new drug with potential side effects) I would participate. It seems like normal course of action is to get Pit all the way through; so by getting placebo you are getting a chance to reduce the amount of chemicals in your body. You and baby are under constant surveillance and you might help women in the future need less drugs!
I would just make sure that you are still allowed an epi if you get to the point you want one.
Good luck
I would go for it. They stopped my pitocin a couple times during my labor because my contractions were continuous. I think it would be interesting to see what your body does. I was only put on pitocin because the epidural slowed down my contractions though... so a little different.
Good luck!
