Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

help with transition of bed&room

so i neeed some opinions,

baby #2 is on it's way soon, ( as in within the next 2 weeks)

Lo is still in his crib he is 16 months old. a friend gave us a very low toddler bed and we have railings for it.

However we do not know the sex of the baby, therefor are unsure whether or not we are moving LO rooms or just bed. Would you transition the bed for now and then if need be he will already be accustomed to the bed and then move that if need be. or let everything stay as it is since baby #2 will be sleeping in our bedroom for the first month or two.

when i had LO he slept in our room for about 1 month and a half but had taken his naps in his crib from about 2 weeks, so he was used to his room and the transition was smooth. He is the best sleeper ever and i think that was probably a big reason why/

Re: help with transition of bed&room

  • You could try the switch now and see how it goes, but I wouldn't force it if your LO doesn't seem ready and isn't sleeping well since there will be so much going on when the baby comes.  We moved DD to a twin bed with rails at 18 months (we also wanted it over with before the baby came, plus we are having another girl so I wanted to reuse DD's crib bedding) and the switch went great.  She is also an awesome sleeper and we literally have had zero issues, she has only gotten out of bed once during nap time and I just put her right back in and she went to sleep.  We did get a video monitor for her room and I highly recommend that if you don't have one, its good for piece of mind to know she is actually IN bed without having to go in and disturb her.  DH wanted to just move DD#1's room all together so we could keep the nursery the same, but I didn't want to do that..DD knows where HER room is and I felt like it would confuse her to swap rooms on her.  We made a huge deal out of the whole big girl room/bed thing and she was excited and took right to it.  This LO will be sleeping in our room for a few months also, so if the switch hadn't gone well I would have kept DD in her crib longer and that would have been fine too.  GL!

  • forgot to mention that the daycare will not switch them to cots until they switch rooms around 18 months. So i'm not sure how that will affect. And when i am in the hospital, LO will stay with his grandparents , they have both a crib and toddler bed, but LO might try to push the limit and not stay in bed. he does have a harder time sleeping there

  • I would wait.  Use the PNP for your newborn for a while.  There's no need to transition this early, and I don't think it's a good idea to do this at the same time as making a huge family change.
