Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Dairy Sensitivity?

I am connecting the dots, and I'm thinking my DS my have a dairy sensitivity. Here's a short history....

-very gassy baby with smelly toots (I breast fed for 10 months) combo fed from 8 mo on and now he's on formula

-when I introduced yogurt at 7 mo I think he got an upset tummy and had a few little red dots on his face.

-tried cooking with milk for his food and was very gassy after meal

-the biggest problem has been the he's been sick way more than I think is normal. He had croup over Christmas, an ear infection last month and now is getting over a cold with chesty cough. The reading I've done says that a dairy sensitivity can trigger respiratory illness.

So.... we are going to get him tested this weekend, first with the kinesiology method (insurance doesn't cover the blood test).

I am really uncertain as to what to do in terms of formula/milk now... do I switch to soy formula for the next month (until he's 1) and then go to soy milk as a drink after that? We'll probably end up seeing a dietitian but I'd like to hear what you guys are doing with your diary allergic/sensitive/intolerant babies.

Re: Dairy Sensitivity?

  • We are headed in the same direction with DS #2.  He has been sick pretty much all the time since Thanksgiving.  He has had 7 ear infections, runny noses, wheezing, and severe eczema.  We have been treating him with Zantac for reflux since 6 months old.  When I stopped it as a trial he began vomiting violently.  We put him on Similac Sensitive (since he refused to nurse from 3 months on).  Maybe try soy formula since it does not have dairy...DS is really gassy and always squirming and uncomfortable.  We are going to see a Pediatric GI this month.  GL with everything.  It is terrible when they are sick so much.

  • My LO has a dairy sensitivity- he would spit up constantly and always be really gassy and have smelly/ dark green poop.  He also had constant bright red cheeks and a stuffy nose that never went away.

We tried him on soy at 6 months and that was a complete disaster.   He didin't gain any weight and started missing milestones.  We put him on hypoallergenic formula (at 8 months) and all the problems were gone instantly.

As far as solid foods go I have to be really careful what I give him.  He is just starting to take yogurt and can't have any cheese.  I have to be careful not to give him anything with hidden butter or dairy too.  So we are going pretty slow.

But, the doctor said most kids grow out of it by 2-3 years old.  We are going to try whole milk when he is one, and if that doesn't work we will do rice or almond milk.

Hope your LO feels better soon!
