Rash or Ringworm?

DD went to her 12 month checkup 3 days ago and the doctor noticed she had some small dry patches on her back. I had just assumed it was her excema flaring up a little again and had been putting her unscented shea butter lotion on her daily. Anyways, the doctor gave me a prescription for athletes foot cream believing it was the beginning of ring worm. I have NO idea where she would have got that from. We don't own cats nor has she been around anyone that has them, she is not in day care so no idea. I've been putting the cream on her back 3x daily as instructed and today her back is worse! Its spread across the top of her shoulders and now its on the back of her knee. I know she is uncomfortable and itchy and she has been super fussy all day. I'm taking her back to the doctor in the morning. Have any of your LO's gone through this? Any advice?

Re: Rash or Ringworm?

  • I got this once from my x who was a wrestler, eew. It got worse before it got better while using medicine. Have any of the patches taken a circle form? That's usually the give away that it's for sure ring worm. Its extremely contagious, sheets, toilet seats, skin on skin. Has he been to any activities or playdates?

  • Just one but I asked the mom and her LO doesn't have the rash and this was over 3 weeks ago so I don't think its from that. Also I have touched her rash and ok I know gross but didn't wash my hands right away (I did wash them thoroughly when I got to a sink though) and I don't have any kind of rash and neither does DH. As for the ring shape I don't see it, that is why I'm wondering if its a rash.

I have no idea. How would I know the difference?

  • I think around day 3 it takes the circle shape and it is obvious too. It is extremely itchy so I would think she would be pretty cranky. Hopefully its something else. I would think you or dh would get it from giving her baths and what not. Just make sure u keep all of her bedding and clothing clean to be safe.

  • What about impetigo? Sounds scarier then what it is. Strep and Staph bacteria gets on the skin and causes a rash. Sometimes it will look like a blister too. Could you maybe wash the rash with mild soap and water before you put the cream on? Just thinking that may help dry it up.

  • We have the very same situation.  One doctor said eczema and one said ring worm.  Dylan has it on his lower back and shoulders.  One spot on his back was a clear "ring" but I think it's a combo of both.  I just alternate Aquafor and the prescription meds on the patches.  It sucks though, sorry you're LO is dealing with it, too.
