Basement stairs

SO this might be a strange question and may not even come across as logical to anyone else. We have a finished basement with a door at the top of the stairs but I have this hugely irrational fear that the door will get left open and DFD will fall down the stairs.....I know they make the knob covers and we have one but I'm just more afraid since it's used several times a day that someone will forget. I have been super vigilant but the problem is that the door is down the hallway in a corner that is not easily visible by just walking around.

Does anyone know of a device that can help with this? I know I'm reaching here but I'm new to this parenting stuff and I'm a little bit of a worry-wart (OK, a lot)!!!

  • we installed a slide lock on the top of our basement door for this reason. it is super simple to install. it is similar to a lock on a public restroom if that gives you an idea of what it looks like.

  • Could you put a gate at the top of the steps and still close the door? We have the same set up and I've often thought about putting a gate up for added safety. But so far, we haven't had any problems with forgetting to close the door. I know, it only takes one time!

  • Yeah, that was the only thing I thought about too....was putting a gate on the other side of the door. Thanks ladies!

  • We have the doorknob cover on ours.  So far, we are fine with that.  When DD is sneaking the knob covers open, we will put a small slide lock in the upper corner out of her reach.  They are $3.50 at Lowes, and we already bought one to put on our patio french doors.  I had one on the patio door for DS, and one of those hinge stoppers, like at hotels, on the front door for DS too.  He didn't escape after those were installed.

I actually thought of going there this weekend to see if I could find anything (and of course to shop). lol That place is going to be the death of me!

Maybe I should just buy an attendant to stand there day and night?! :-) lol I'll have to talk to the hubby about that.

The main reason why I'm worried about it is because I run a daycare out of our house with the majority being school aged kids and older toddlers that can open the door. I have to be hyper vigilant on it (and I don't mind obviously) but it's just scary that one time I could slip. :-(
