Ignorant comment at the zoo today (FF related)

DH and I took Colin to the zoo today, and as we were taking a break, watching him nap in his stroller, this woman walked by with her family. She took one look at the bottle of formula in the stroller's cupholder and said, loud enough for me to hear, "I don't know WHY so many people feed their babies formula." I was too shocked to say anything to her, but for some reason her comment really stung. It makes me so upset that someone would make such a snap judgment about a situation she knows nothing about. Hey lady, do you have any idea how hard I worked to BF my son, and how sad it made me when I came to the realization that it just wasn't going to work for us? I know there is absolutely nothing wrong with FFing, but I was finally to the point where I no longer felt guilty about giving up on BFing, and that biotch's stupid comment brought all those emotions right back. Ugh! Thanks for letting me vent. 1ht

  • Don?t let it get to you some people just like to talk to hear themselves lol!

Anyway, how did she know it wasn?t pumped breastmilk! Ridiculous!

  • People are way too judgmental, my inlaws included. Don't let the ignorance of other people make you feel bad about yourself. When people say things like that just remember that it's not how you feed your baby that's important, but that you feed them. Maybe even reply to those people by asking if they'd prefer you didn't feed your baby at all. We're still kind of struggling a bit with BFing and having to supplement and I'm not sure how much longer I can keep it up, but my inlaws act like stopping is the worst thing I can do for my son. It's crazy. So don't worry about that lady, I'm sure you are a WONDERFUL mother and that's all that matters. Big Smile

  • I'm sorry!  That's awful!  Dont let it get to you!

Unrelated... I assume you went to Riverbanks zoo?  If so, how was it with an infant?  I've been wanting to take DD, but she's young (7 wks) so I didnt know if it was too soon.

  • It is so inappropriate for people to judge. I EBF and I love it but understand that others have to FF. How did she know it wasn't expressed milk, anyway?

    Not cool.

  • Thanks, ladies. I guess she knew it wasn't expressed BM because we feed Similac Sensitive, which tends to get sort of "frothy" when you mix it on the go and don't let it settle for a while first. Still, though. It's nice to hear you all agree that she was out of line. :) The next time someone says something stupid like that, I don't think I'll be able to hold back!

Yep, we went to Riverbanks! It wasn't bad at all. The paths are all wide and very stroller friendly, and the bathrooms have changing stations in them (as we learned, when DS had a mustardy poopsplosion). In hindsight, I probably would have brought along the Moby, and not just the stroller, b/c there was so much going on that DS refused to nap, and then got pretty fussy because he was overtired. Overall though, we all had a great time. :)

  • DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED!  I cannot stand people like that.  We had so much trouble too.  He couldn't latch and then I had supply issues.  It killed me to have to switch even though I never thought formula was a bad thing.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that.  That woman needs a good smack!

Thanks for the info!  This weather is so awesome right now... perfect time for the zoo before it gets too hot!  Glad yall had a good time!

  • I know that in the heat of the moment you can be too shocked to say anything, but I probably would have said 'its not formula. its called a breast pump." even it was formula how is she going to know.

  • I wonder what she'd say about someone who does both! Whenever we take DD out somewhere, we have formula in the diaper bag. I am not comfortable NIP, and I don't always have pumped milk in the fridge. Call me selfish, but at least I'm feeding my kid. I really don't understand the judgement around FF.
