Nap question

When did your LO's drop their 3rd nap? How long did they sleep at night and how long were their naps during the day.

My guys are sleeping 11-12 hours a night and will usually eat once within that time frame. I've been doing some reading about sleep/naps (Ferber) and he suggests not to put babies down for a nap later than 4pm. My guys go to bed between 630-700pm. That's a long stretch for them to wait to go to bed. Ferber also suggests that babies around 6 months should only be sleeping 12 hours TOTAL in a 24 hour period. Mine are sleeping a lot more than that...

Today they have napped 9-1030 and 1245 - they're still down and it's 315 here. Yikes. Should they be sleeping that much at 5.5 months?

Am I overthinking this? Should I just let them sleep and stop being a spaz? Should I stop reading so much?  Wink

Whoa, I just bolded the one part because that sounds ridiculous to me. My LOs are 9 months now and still sleep a little over 15 hours total. 12 hours at night (straight thru) and two naps at 1.5-2 hours each.

But to answer your question, they dropped their third cat nap around 7 months. Coincedentally that is also when they began sleeping straight through...

    Hope that helps!

  • Crap.  Have to run.  But I was just reading the same thing in Ferber last night and wondering the same thing.  Mine sleep more than 12 hour total making me wonder if I'm screwing something up... Yes, I think we are both over thinking.  HSHHC has higher recs for total sleep time I think but I'm going to double check it tonight.  I hope this made sense....

  • Okay good. I'm not crazy. I thought 12 hours total sleep in 24 hours was a bit on the low side ... I was beginning to think I was screwing something up. My guys slept 12 hours last night (woke to eat at midnight) then had an 1.5hr nap at 9 and a 2.5hr nap (wow!) at 1245. I think we may be entering the 6m gs here too... they're eating a lot more frequently than normal. Maybe that's accounting for all the daytime sleepies today.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I do think that sounds a little low in total. My guys always slept more than that. At that age we definitely still had the early evening nap usually between 5pm and 6pm. It was usually just 20 mins or so and I'd wake them up before bed time bottle at 7:10pm. They eventually dropped it on their own as the eating schedule shifted. They were switched from waking at 3 for an afternoon nap to waking at 4 and eating solids at 4:30 so they were able to make it to bed time. Now they sleep about 11 hours over night and anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours during the day spread over 2 naps.

My boys would be a hot cranky mess if they only slept 12 hrs a day. We just dropped that 3rd nap this week. I think DS1 should have dropped it a few weeks ago though b/c he was always waking up early during his other 2 naps. They sleep 11-11.5 hrs at night and 2 naps that are around 2.25hrs long (sometimes less). I lack the brain cells to add that up LOL

This for sure! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought 12 hours wasn't enough. I think mine are still too little to drop the 3rd nap. If we did that today it would mean being awake for 3.5 hours before bedtime -- not going to go over very well if I tried. I just feel dumb putting them down for a nap between 5-6pm, even if it is just a cat nap.
