I need to vent. If you can make me feel better about this, please do!
This morning was my 1 hr gd test. I was given very little information about the test by my dr's office. They basically said come in early. I had to call back to ask specific questions about fasting, what will go on, etc. The dr's office told me that I didn't need to fast and that I just shouldn't eat "sugary cereal."
I get up early so when I ate oatmeal (the kind cooked on the stove, very low sugar) and a banana at 7 am, I didn't really think anything of it. My appointment wasn't until 10 am so I needed something substantial to hold me over and since they said it wasn't a problem, I ate it.
All seemed fine until after my appointment when I went back in to get my blood taken. I was feeling jittery and I asked if this was normal. I said that I had eaten as they told me to do, and the one lab tech said, "Oh, I hope that doesn't throw it off or you'll need to come in for the 3 hr." I said that the dr's office told me something different and some b*tch who was also getting her blood done decided to horn in on the conversation and tell me "she was told to fast during all of her pregnancies" blah, blah. The lab tech responded to her saying that it's not "mandatory for 1 hr, but it's more accurate."
So what the heck?! Is eating going mess this up?! Why would my doctor's office not tell me about it being "more accurate" to fast? I took the day off work and I don't want to have to take another day, especially one that I'll be worried for thinking that I have freaking GD! I'm so pissed right now... (and I should say that talking to my mother just made this about 10x worse because she went on about she's always heard to fast. GRRRRRRR)
Re: Really Pissed: 1 Hr GD Test
I've never fasted for my 1 hour. The 3 hour is a fasting test because they need your fasting glucose number.
If your doctor told you not to fast, then ignore them.
Same here!
I wasn't told to fast for my 1 hour. I ate a bowl of Cheerios or something right before I left for my appointment and my results came back totally fine. No need to get stressed out about it, especially if your doctor told you not to fast.
Also, (not that you mentioned this, but I figured I'd throw it out there just in case) don't get worried if you don't get a call about your results. If you haven't heard from anyone before your next appointment it means that your test was fine and you don't need to go in for a 3 hour test.
My Ovulation Chart
I had to repeat the 1 HR GD test, because the first time I got stuck in horrible unexpected traffic and missed the window to take the test. I did not eat that morning, because I usually drink an Ensure (higher sugar) and did not want to throw it off. I was sooo sick from the drink. I saw my doctor and he said that I needed to eat normally. I told him what I usually eat for breakfast and he said that is fine.
The 1 hour test is not designed to diagnose Gestational Diabetes, but to determine who needs the 3 hour GTT test. Since there are often times no symptoms, they test everyone with the 1 hour and anyone that is over a certain range is then given the GTT test. I believe I saw somewhere that only 1/4 women who take the 3-hour test actually have diabetes.
Hope this helps!
During my first pregnancy I had a similar experience. The doctor said to go ahead and eat, so I did. I went in after lunch to take the test and it did mess up the results and I had to go back in for the 3 hour. And I passed the 3 hour screening. This pregnancy I knew better and fasted....and passed.
I also found it annoying that my doctor during my first pregnancy didnt say anything about fasting before the test....and honestly neither did the doctor I'm seeing during this pregnancy. I just knew better on my own this time!
And its advice that anytime I see someone post a question about GD testing that I try to pass along.
they told me not to fast and to eat normal (just not like a cupful of sugar)
i had a piece of toast, and egg, and some turkey bacon like 2 hours before. i passed.
Thanks for all the replies. Phew. I'm feeling better now. Deep breaths.... and a nap.
I think I was especially worked up because the lab tech, nosy woman, and my mom all acted like, "Duh... you're so dumb. Of course you aren't supposed to eat." Not to mention thinking that I'm going to have to worry/go through it all again if I did screw up the results.
Ah, well. I'll keep you posted if I fail. Could be good info for a person about to take it.
OMG! This totally just gave me a craving for their donuts!!!!! mmmmmmMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm hot n fresh is the best
