Really Pissed: 1 Hr GD Test

I need to vent. If you can make me feel better about this, please do!

This morning was my 1 hr gd test. I was given very little information about the test by my dr's office. They basically said come in early. I had to call back to ask specific questions about fasting, what will go on, etc. The dr's office told me that I didn't need to fast and that I just shouldn't eat "sugary cereal."

I get up early so when I ate oatmeal (the kind cooked on the stove, very low sugar) and a banana at 7 am, I didn't really think anything of it. My appointment wasn't until 10 am so I needed something substantial to hold me over and since they said it wasn't a problem, I ate it.

All seemed fine until after my appointment when I went back in to get my blood taken. I was feeling jittery and I asked if this was normal. I said that I had eaten as they told me to do, and the one lab tech said, "Oh, I hope that doesn't throw it off or you'll need to come in for the 3 hr." I said that the dr's office told me something different and some b*tch who was also getting her blood done decided to horn in on the conversation and tell me "she was told to fast during all of her pregnancies" blah, blah. The lab tech responded to her saying that it's not "mandatory for 1 hr, but it's more accurate."

So what the heck?! Is eating going mess this up?! Why would my doctor's office not tell me about it being "more accurate" to fast? I took the day off work and I don't want to have to take another day, especially one that I'll be worried for thinking that I have freaking GD! I'm so pissed right now... (and I should say that talking to my mother just made this about 10x worse because she went on about she's always heard to fast. GRRRRRRR)

Re: Really Pissed: 1 Hr GD Test

  • My dr said that there's no reason to fast for the 1hr - I had mine done in the morning after I had breakfast as well and my results were good.  GL!

  • I've never fasted for my 1 hour. The 3 hour is a fasting test because they need your fasting glucose number.

If your doctor told you not to fast, then ignore them.

  • FWIW, I was told not to fast for the one hour. I had mine at about 2 in the afternoon and had eaten normally that day. I passed no problem. The tech actually told me a story of a woman who came in for hers with a multi-pack of Krispy Kremes (apparently that was her normal breakfast) and she still passed. By contrast, my step-sister fasted for hers just because it was at like 7am and she still failed (she also failed the 3hr so...)

  • When I took my 1 hr the instruction papers I got with it told me to eat 2 hrs prior and then drink the drink 30 mins before going to get my blood drawn.  I never heard anything about it being more accurate to fast.  I don't think it would make too much of a difference.  I did fail my 1 hr test but passed the 3 hr (which is a better indicator I think anyway) so hopefully you won't have thrown your numbers off too much.  Good luck.

  • I didn't eat anything before my 1-hour (just because I was feeling nervous about it, not because my doctor told me not to), and I failed it but passed the 3-hour.

    Same here!

  • I wasn't told to fast for my 1 hour.  I ate a bowl of Cheerios or something right before I left for my appointment and my results came back totally fine.  No need to get stressed out about it, especially if your doctor told you not to fast.

Also, (not that you mentioned this, but I figured I'd throw it out there just in case) don't get worried if you don't get a call about your results.  If you haven't heard from anyone before your next appointment it means that your test was fine and you don't need to go in for a 3 hour test.

  • Wow, chill out. If you don't pass the 1 hour screening you'll have to do the 3-hour. That's all. You can't really mess up the 1 hour.
  • I had to repeat the 1 HR GD test, because the first time I got stuck in horrible unexpected traffic and missed the window to take the test. I did not eat that morning, because I usually drink an Ensure (higher sugar) and did not want to throw it off. I was sooo sick from the drink. I saw my doctor and he said that I needed to eat normally. I told him what I usually eat for breakfast and he said that is fine.

The 1 hour test is not designed to diagnose Gestational Diabetes, but to determine who needs the 3 hour GTT test. Since there are often times no symptoms, they test everyone with the 1 hour and anyone that is over a certain range is then given the GTT test. I believe I saw somewhere that only 1/4 women who take the 3-hour test actually have diabetes.

     Hope this helps!

  • I was not instructed to fast for my 1 hour, just to avoid sugary cereals, muffins, donuts, jellies, etc.

  • During my first pregnancy I had a similar experience.  The doctor said to go ahead and eat, so I did.  I went in after lunch to take the test and it did mess up the results and I had to go back in for the 3 hour. And I passed the 3 hour screening.  This pregnancy I knew better and fasted....and passed.

I also found it annoying that my doctor during my first pregnancy didnt say anything about fasting before the test....and honestly neither did the doctor I'm seeing during this pregnancy.  I just knew better on my own this time!

And its advice that anytime I see someone post a question about GD testing that I try to pass along.

  • I was specifically told not to fast Yes

  • I was specifically told not to fast for the 1-hr, to eat a normal breakfast (as long as normal doesn't = high sugar), as that will give you the most accurate results for how your body actually metabolizes sugar while pregnant. Fasting is not a normal pregnant state.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • my doctor told me not to fast and she didn't even tell me to do it 1st thing in the am .. all she said is that I probably shouldnt eat a snickers bar on the way to the office in my car lol. I wouldnt worry about it to much
  • Like the PPs, I wasn't told to fast by doctors. I failed my 1 hour, but passed my 3 hour with flying colors. Don't worry too much, it is always better to know if you have GD anyway because of the health of your baby...that is what is most important.
  • Fasting is not necessary for the 1 hour test.  Mine wasn't until 4:45pm and I ate normally during the day and even had 2 glasses of flavored lemonade from Olive Garden a few hours before the test and I still passed.  If your body is processing sugar as it's supposed to, you won't have a problem.  If you fail, as many people do, they will reschedule you for the 3 hour test.  At this point it's nothing to get so upset about.

  • I was told to eat like normal for mine, and I passed. Sorry that you are getting conflicting info.

  • Thanks for all the replies. Phew. I'm feeling better now. Deep breaths.... and a nap.

I think I was especially worked up because the lab tech, nosy woman, and my mom all acted like, "Duh... you're so dumb. Of course you aren't supposed to eat." Not to mention thinking that I'm going to have to worry/go through it all again if I did screw up the results.

Ah, well. I'll keep you posted if I fail. Could be good info for a person about to take it.

  • I didn't fast and I was fine. Listen to your doctor.

  • They didn't tell me I was doing my 1 hour test at my last appointment (on Wednesday), so I had a normal breakfast and a pudding cup before I came in! Hopefully that doesn't skew it too much.  I'll find out either tomorrow or Monday.  It would be annoying to have to come in yet again to take the 3-hour test, but at least I'd know it was happening and would avoid the pudding this time. :)

  • My doctors didn't make me fast.  I had mine done at 7pm - so fasting was not really an option.  (I did fail, but I dont think it had to do with not fasting.)

  • I was told not to fast with DS and again this time.  I passed both times.

  • After reading the PPs, now I'm pissed! Was I the only one who was told to fast? I have my GD Test tomorrow ... and I'm supposed to start fasting at midnight tonight. Just knowing I can't have food later has caused me to craved everything sugar. Honestly, it would have been better if I was told not to fast ... Sad
