Early Intervention

My pedi gave me the number for our local Early Intervention Program.  I'll Google here in a minute, but what do they do?  Before DD I hadn't heard of them so I know nothing.  Any info/experiences would be appreciated!  Thanks.

Re: Early Intervention

  • They come to our house every month to see ds. Basically they just make sure that they are meeting all of their milestones and give you information. They also have OT, PT, ST if that is needed at some point. I would really encourage you to enroll in this program. Even if you don't think that your LO needs it. They are a wealth of information.

  • We just set up our first meeting with a case manager.  Sheis coming to our house and going to go through some paperwork with us and then set up evaluations for speech for DS#1 and PT for the twins.

    So readers digest version:

This program has been a real blessing for us and it has been amazing watching out daughter blossom for a 4 months old that would not attempt to lift her head to a 1 year old that is on track for her gestational age and making big strides in catching up to her actual age peers.

Considering the fact that during the assessment DD was 75% delayed in some areas, and we would not have seen nearly as much progress so quiclky without this program.

We have been with the program for 8 months now, and ifyou have any specific questions about it I'd be very happy to share.

One thing to be aware of, the program is funded through the Federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act and is usually administered through your states Department of Education's, Special Education Services Division.  I didn't know that and when I recieved the paperwork inthe mail there was some pamplet in there about, "Services for your Disabled Child."  I cried for like 20 minutes.  But then I read it and filled out the papers and I am glad that I did.

  • My oldest DS sees a physical therapist once a week through EI.  It's an awesome program!  He has some delays in gross and fine motor, so she helps him do activities to improve those skills.  He didn't walk independently until 21 months.   Now they're helping him work on core strength and walking up stairs by himself.  It's great because I learn tons of activities to do with him at home.  I would highly recommend it.

  • Overall this program is great.  I don't like some of the logistics associated with a government program, but the service itself is quality!

Andrew has been in some sort of EI for most of his life.  He is 24 months adjusted, 27 actual.

He's currently in OT, ST, and we're adding PT.  The therapy helps him tremendously.
