VBAC's In Oklahoma/Tulsa?

I am not currently pregnant but had my yearly appointment yesterday with my new OB/GYN. We recently moved to OK from MO and was so sad to leave my previous OB/GYN! He was amazing!

Anyway, I had a c-section with DS because he was face-presentation and large. After the surgery my former OB told me that a VBAC was a definite possiblity with how things went.

Fast-forward to yesterday: I am talking with my new OB/GYN about DH and I starting to TTC this fall and my plans for a VBAC when she completely took the rug out from under me. PLICO - Oklahoma's biggest malpractice insurance does not allow OB's to perform VBAC's! WTF! I'm so disappointed right now, I cried the entire was home from my appointment.

I am not comfortable going with a homebirth midwife and would like to deliver in a hospital but I am trying to figure out if anyone else has ever encountered anything like this! I keep calling offices and none of them do VBAC's.  Is there a listing of doctors who perform them?  I never thought it would be this hard with all of the information and studies out there supporting VBAC's.

  • My OB is the only one in the state of Oklahoma that WILL do a VBAC!!! His name is Dr. Robert Ryan at Saint Anthony's downtown. He is an awesome awesome OB. I have been going to him for years! This is my first, but he was even on the news a couple of weeks ago talking about how he will do a VBAC. You may want o look into him.

  • I too am having a VBAC in OKC.  OU/Children's hospital does allow VBACs depending on the reason for and type of incision/C-Section you had performed.  I am seeing a midwife at the OB clinic in the OU Physicians Building, but other OBs and Midwifes in the clinic perform them as well.  The hardest part is finding a hospital that allows them due to the malpractice law suits, and I was under the understanding that OU/Children's was the only one that did in this area at this time but I could be wrong.  Hope it all works out for you.

  • I know the OB/GYN group at OU will do vbac, but you have to send in your info (c-section operation report) and the Dr (whoever you pick) will review it and see if you are a good candidate. We sent in our paperwork and are waiting on a return phone call about it. Still not 100% sure if we are going to do it, but definitely want to hear an unbiased opinion. Good luck!!

  • Thank you for posting your question, I'm searching for the same thing.  From my research (just messing around on google..) I've only found Dr Ryan at St Anthony's and the staff at OU Med as well. Has anyone had a VBAC at either of these facilities?  I'm having to work very hard to convince DH to consider VBAC, he is so freaked out and thinks that it must be dangerous if hardly any OK OB's will allow it. I would LOVE to hear some success stories!
  • Maybe have a consultation with one of the homebirth midwives in the area to see if that would maybe make you more comfortable with that option? I know its not something just anyone can be comfortable with, but it might be worth looking into further if having a VBAC is that important to you. I personally have not had any csections, but I do know a few moms who have had successful VBACs at home. I had a home birth 6 weeks ago with my 2nd baby and its an experience I would recommend for any low-risk birth!
