Help with name spelling

DH and I are torn between the spelling of our LO's name.  [Poll]

Re: Help with name spelling

  • Madeline/Madeleine is a long name.  Although I like the French spelling, unless you are ethnically French, I would stick to shorter/easier.

We have also had issues with spelling.  We finally settled on "Teya" which I don't love, but it was the most phonetic and easiest.

Good luck - and I think the name you chose is beautiful!

  • Wow, that is tough.  I LOVE the French spelling so much!  But she'd ALWAYS be correcting people.  Tough one.

This is on our list of middle names, so we'd probably do the French spelling, but no one ever needs to know how to spell someone's middle name....

    LOVE the combo btw.

I ended up voting for the French spelling.  I just love it.

    Me too, me too!

  • Neither DH nor I are French though we both studied it in school and love the culture.  I think that's why we're torn.  Thanks for your feedback!
  • Madeline (from the classic children's books) is spelled the first way :)

That extra e will only be confusing!

  • I chose the French spelling because I was a French minor and therefore have an affinity for the language!

I'm also kind of a phonetic nut.  The French version makes the "en" sound at the end.  However, Madeline is just they way it sounds with and "ine" sound at the end, so it completely changes the pronunciation of the word.

If you don't go French, may I suggest the Americanized version of Madelyn(n).

I love those books! But I always thought that Madeline sounds like line whereas Madeleine sounds like lynn. My sister in-law is going to use the French spelling because she likes the lynn sound more than the line ending.

  • I like the French spelling because I like the "lynn" ending sound better than the "line" sound.
