Question about the 20 week scan

I am planning a trip to Canada that is about 7 weeks long. I'll get back to India when I'm about 22 weeks pregnant and I leave after my NT scan. I can't remember what the 20 week scan does? Is it just an anatomy scan or do they check for other important things?

We don't plan on finding out the sex, one because we don't want to and 2nd, in India it's illegal for the dr to reveal the sex as there are still instances of female genocide here (I know HORRIBLE).

So my question is if I miss the 20 week scan (and say have it around 22-24 weeks) will it make a difference? I'd ask my dr. but I don't see her for another 3 weeks, and if I do need this ultra sound then I'll have to start planning how I can get an ultra sound in Canada. I'd have to see my family dr and he'd have to schedule it which could take some time.

Re: Question about the 20 week scan

  • The 20 week scan isn't just an anatomy scan.  It scans for abnormalities and to make sure baby is growing right and that their organs are forming/ formed correctly.  I would make sure after you get back you get the ultrasound done.

  • Doing it between 22-24 weeks is fine but I would try and stay as close to 22 weeks as possible. As the baby starts getting bigger it gets harder to get the shots you need.
  • I definitely do not plan to skip it, I just wanted to know if I needed to schedule it in Canada or if I could wait until I got back to India. I'll be 22 weeks when I get back so if I schedule it right away it should be ok. Thanks everyone!

  • You may want to call your doctor and ask.  I'm not sure what the ideal date range for this scan is.
