Trey as a given name or a nickname (i.e., the third)?

I like the name Trey for a boy, but do you think it works for a given name, or is it usually a nickname given to a third? I looked up the meaning and it says it means "three." DH isn't a junior or anything - I just like the way it sounds with our last name. Thoughts?

This may just be me, but when I meet a Trey, I always ask if he is a "third". Usually the answer is no, so there are many people for whom it is a given name. But I keep asking, because I'm interested in nicknames, and I love to know what people's real names are. I'm not sure if others do this or think this way, though. I think it will just be up to you whether it would bother you to get asked that question..

My SBIL is Trey, but that's because he's the third. Until I met him, I had only heard it as a given name. I think its acceptable both ways.

When we werent sure of the gender, we tossed the name Trey over. My husband is a Jr. and he heard it from a kid whos given name was his dads but it was his nm and he was only called by that. With that said, I still think the name is cool even if your husband isnt a jr. I just think the meaning of it may not make as much sense.

I have only ever heard this as a nn for being the third. Like Will Smith's son, or Charlotte's first husband on Sex and the City.

My BIL goes by Trey. His names is actually William, but he's a third (his dad was a Jr.) and he's the third son born in the family.

I like Trey, I've always thought it would be so cool as a nick name for Demitrius.
