Tailbone question

I broke my coccyx when I was in middle school, it was a vertical fracture and was told by the doctor at the time that with the way the fracture was, chances are it could refracture throughout my life.  I'm assuming that because the tailbone flexes back during labor it shouldn't be an issue but I was wondering if anyone has any experience?

I've heard that your tailbone can break during labor but I don't know how common it is. While I was taking the hospital tour, our guide(who is a doula) said that turning on your side or squatting at the end of the bed when it is time to push can help your tailbone flex out of the way. HTH

  • Thanks!  A broken tailbone is miserable.  In fact I'd take my current hip discomfort any day over the broken coccyx.  I'll be sure to squat as much as possible!!

  • I don't know how common it is but my mom broke hers during labor with my brother.  She used to tell him he was a pain in the ass right from the start. :)

  • My doctor never said anything about mine breaking, but I'm 5 weeks out and it still hurts really bad to sit down.
  • Wow, I had never heard of that.  But that does explain why I was having such bad tailbone pain a couple of weeks after delivery.  I don't think I actually broke it, but I had a lot of pain.
