I am an Elementary Guidance Counselor here in FL. Recently, our district has proposed repositioning us and eliminating counselors at all the school levels. Basically, they plan to do away with us and put us in the classroom to teach next year. We each got a letter the day before we left for Spring Break of the possiblity of being repositioned, and then today we got an email indicating that the county was sending us another letter that will list our certification areas so that we can plan accordingly on where and what level we can teach. This stinks for those who have been out of the classroomf or years, as they will have to go back and get recertified etc etc. Anyways, my elementary education certificate is current, so I plan ont eaching K, 1, or 2nd. We are adding classes at each grade level at my school next year, so my school will be hiring more teachers and my administration has told me t hey will put me in one of those teaching spots.
While I am excited about teaching (it is the best part of my job when I get to do classroom guidance) it is still sad that the area i LOVE may go away. It is not a definite yet, but looks like they are heading that way with all the prep they have been doing. This will effect GuIdance Counselors, Media Specialists and Network IT Managers.
Re: NAR: work issues!
That stinks but really great that they are trying to move current employees into new positions. Scott is calling for a $703 million cut in school funding for next year (budget isn't yet approved so who knows what the actual number will end up being) so a lot of people will probably end up losing their jobs all together. Glad your school is trying to reposition people.
And on a note related to this board, did you hear that he is talking about cutting the DCF budget by millions? This will drastically impact the foster care system and I fear that many more children will fall through the cracks. Certainly the availability of services to fostr families will be decreased. Ironically, this is at the same time as all of the uproar about the twin children who were adopted by that family and so brutally abused (one died the other was burned all over with chemicals). The state, including the governor is calling for a massive overhaul of the system and better oversight, more social workers, etc. How will that happen with massive budget cuts.
Cuts are always hard and in this really awful economic climate in Florida I would understand the absolute need for cuts (what choice is there) if it weren't for statments like this "Perhaps the most striking feature of Gov. Scott's budget plan is a call for tax cuts totaling nearly $4 billion over the next two years." I hope the children are not the ones that sugger :-(
History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012
oops - I meant suffer.

I am so thankful that our district is trying to reposition us...they figure by eliminating our positions and saving that money, they can save a lot of money by not having to hire as many teachers next yar because we will eat up a good portion of those jobs.
I DID hear about the DCF cuts and it makes me so mad! I am praying really hard on that one! I did hear about that brutal case...so so sad, it made my heart break and really made me cry for those kids!
Where inFL are u?
My DH really wants to move to a warmer climate. He wants AZ or NV and has agreed FL would be okay too. (If I am hot, I want a beach nearby.)
DH and I are both teachers. I think work for teachers is horrible in every state right now. It seems every governor has decided the best way to save money in the budget is to cut education.
My DH thinks this is because it is the only public service they can cut and not have riots. Imagine what the legislatures' homes would look like if suddenly fire departments and police departments had their funding cut like schools have. "Oh sorry Mr. Governor. We just didn't have enough money in our budget to get to that fire in your house before the entire structure caved in..."
It is sad that the kids and the future of America has to suffer because of balancing budgets. I am sure there are other places the budget can be cut.
