Preemies

Reaching Milestones

My baby was a 34 week preemie, and I am noticing he is not doing what he is "supposed" to be doing at his age. Like, he cannot get a hold of things yet, he still seems out of control with his hands, he does smile and coo, a lot. He does not respond to his name yet. He does however recognize me, and grandma and daddy... Should I talk to the pedi about this? Or am I being pushy with him?

Re: Reaching Milestones

  • He's only 2 1/2 months adjusted. Jack wasn't reaching/grabbing for things until around 3 months adjusted and he still doesn't know his name. I don't think they expect that until much later. Does he see any early intervention or a similiar program? It doesn't hurt to talk to your pedi but I'd say he's doing just fine. This is a great site for milestone info.

There's a lot of variety when it comes to milestones.  But with your child being a preemie, it's a good idea to keep an eye on things, and if you have any concerns, you may as well ask - it can't hurt!

  • Honestly, you can relax. His birth and adjusted age are both on the young side to do all of those things you listed. You can always ask your pedi though if you're unsure.

  • Don't forget to adjust his age for his prematurity, and remember to consider there is a range of normal!  It never hurts to ask at his check-ups!
