I need to know: do any of you use the automatic soap dispensers at home?

Because I laugh every time those commercials come on. They're quite nice in a public restroom, but I cant imagine feeling like I needed one in my own home. I am about as far from a germaphobe as you can get, though. I laugh even harder at the paper towel dispenser for your own bathroom. Really?

  • Yes, and then we wrap ourselves completely in Saran Cling Wrap and try not to breathe too much so we don't spread the germs.

I was laughing at that commercial (the lysol one) the other day.  Although I laugh less as autoimmune disease keeps skyrocketing :(  When are people going to get a grip?

  • I AM a germaphobe and I think they are ridiculous too! They make no sense, even in a public place, considering you are washing your hands after touching it.

Anyhoo, did you ever get that letter from Liam? I having a hard time trying to pin him down to write a second one! LOL

Too busy to update the pics for now ... :)

  • So you're making fun of me now? How did you know I had one? I also have voice activate door knobs so I don't have to touch the knobs and the clapper so I don't have to touch light switches.

  • Not yet, but I've seriously considered it.  There is one that you can adjust how much it releases.  My kids have a major issue with having to get like 4 pumps of soap, then the sink bowl overflows with bubbles.

Then I decided they'd just play with it and we'd end up wasting more.

  • I am not a germaphobe either, but I actually think it would be handy in the kids' bathroom.  I mean, there are times when hands need to be washed by the time Rory gets her hands wet, soap pumped into her hands, soap dispenser back where it belongs, hands rinsed, faucet turned off, hands dried...my bathroom needs a full cleaning.  She makes the biggest mess just washing her hands.
  • Are you talking about these paper towels for the bathroom?

If so, these are THE BEST!  I don't use them on a daily basis for just the family, but if I am having a party or entertaining, I put these out.  It is so much nicer for guests to have their own towel than to have to reuse a hand towel that someone else uses.  Also, I used these when DH and I were struck with a stomach virus a few months ago so that we could contain the germs and keep from spreading to the kids.  And, for the record, I don't have an automatic soap dispenser.

DS makes a huge mess too. I can only imagine once DD starts doing it herself.

And I agree with jetta too. DS grabs WAY too much soap. But I think the auto dispenser would be like a toy. It's a no-win.

  • I actually have had one of these for a while. The reason I bought it had nothing to do with germs though. I put it in the kitchen, where often I have gunk on my hands from cooking. Not having to push a dispenser meant no gunk on the soap thing. But I missed my B&BW kitchen soap too much, so when it ran out I put it away. However....I just very recently pulled it back out and put it in the kids bathroom. The boys were making a HUGE mess and I was sick of cleaning up puddles of soap, and like someone else said, tons of bubbles in the sink, etc. I've had it in there for about 2 weeks and it's solved the issue. DS2 is also able to more easily wash his hands all by himself, which is a double bonus. Neither one of them has played with it, which I was worried about - maybe I just got lucky.
  • I have to admit, I've thought about it. The kids get what they are washing off all over the soap dispenser-paint, mud, whatever. Sometimes I think it would be nice if they couldn't touch the regular decorative soap dispenser so the only things I have to clean off is the sink handle, door knobs, walls, floor and all the water they splash everywhere. Sigh. In reality, they would just play with an automatic one and there would be soap everywhere.

  • My MIL has one and I like it for the kids because they don't have to try and pump it out of the dispenser and it controls how many pumps they use. I like it!
  • The only reason I've ever thought about getting one is for the kitchen...so that if I'm handling raw meat or something, I wouldn't get anything on the soap pump like I usually do.  I'd need to find a good deal on it before I'd seriously consider it though.
