Good eating habits

I was wondering at what age you think it is OK to inforce "You have to eat what is in front of you" rather than giving them their choice of PB&J, Mac & Cheese etc.

  • From the time they start solids.

I do think it's important to be in tune with your child--there are very few things my kids won't eat, but if I fix something I know one of them won't eat, I make sure there is an alternative available (generally just making sure they'll like a side or two).

    This.

  • As soon as they start table food.  In my house, we have always had the we make 1 meal rule.  We always make sure there is one thing as part of the meal that we know each of my kids will eat.  Everyone gets a choice of what to eat out of what is placed on the table.  There are certain things that my kids have tried many times so on those nights, we will make something different but that is rare and only because we still have them try the main dish as we know their tastes change.  My kids need to taste everything on the table and that is it.  We don't make a big deal about meals and I know if they are hungry, they will eat.  Depending on moods, they just might not want to eat or not want to eat everything that is part of the meal and that is fine with me.  They know that after dinner, there will be no other food offered - we don't do a night time snack since dinner typically ends around 5:30 or 6 and bedtime is 7.
