I bought the most adorable bedding set from PBK, and have the bumpers. Since purchasing, I have been reading all the information that is discouraging parents from putting bumpers in the crib, due to baby accidentally rolling over and suffocating, or reduced airflow in the crib. Here is my question- if bumpers reduce airflow and therefore oxygen to the baby, how come the research says nothing about bassinets from an airflow standpoint? We have not purchased one yet, but all of the ones i have been looking at are enlcosed on all sides, and many have an overhang that seems to me would impede airflow even more than an open crib. Obviously, babies are not rolling over at all while in bassinets, and they shouldn't be wedging themselves against the sides, but I'm just curious what everyone's opinions are on the matter.

Re: SIDS
I don't know about the bassinet question. We have a cradle with open sides, but mostly bedshare.
But suffocation is not SIDS. If the baby rolls and suffocates from the bumper, that is not SIDS.
Sorry, just a little wording pet peeve I see all the time.
I know this doesn't reallt answer your question, but I am getting my bedding from PBK as well. I opted to get the pieces a la carte and skip the matching bumper and get one of their Breatheable Baby bumpers instead. Might be a good option to use instead of the bumper that goes with the set.
First let me say that one of my cousins died of SIDS so that highly influences my opinions on the matter. I did and will do everything I can that is recommended to prevent SIDS/suffocation/etc. This is my choice and others have different thoughts and preferences. So we'll do the same as we did with DD - cradle in the beginning, use sleepsacks, no additional bedding, no bumpers in crib, no toys in the crib, light fan going to help circulate air, baby always on their back, etc. We did put a breathable bumper on the crib when DD was about 7 months old (it's basically a mesh liner) because she would stick her arms and legs between the crib slats and wake up. She only started getting blankets in her crib this past winter (at almost 2). She certainly never noticed any lack.
I was wondering this same thing the other day.
I guess I'm not sure what you're asking...? I think you answered your own question with "Obviously, babies are not rolling over at all while in bassinets..."
We'll use a breathable bumper (I don't like the full bedding "sets" anyway) in the crib, and we'll use the bassinet only while the baby is tiny and incapable of rolling his/her face into the sides. And actually, we'll be using a pack n play bassinet, similar to this
so no real issues with the sides anyway (but not b/c I'd be concerned about SIDS or suffocation).
I don't buy this at all. Do you have any actual source for this? Are you sure you're not thinking of their comments on standard bumpers?
