BC options...

I was dead set on getting Mirena but looks like our insurance does not cover it, so for me to pay for it out of pocket it would be about 850 dollars... which I guess in the long run isnt that much but it is waaaay out of our price range right now.

I have been on nuvaring, the pill, the shot, and the patch and all have given me severe migraines. Anyone else have the thing probably and what are you doing for BC?

Re: BC options...

  • Will they cover Paragard (the non-hormonal IUD)?

If my insurance didn't cover any IUD, I'd probably go back on the pill but maybe try a different one this time?  Honestly, we're likely done having kids so I'd probably make DH go in for a vasectomy - but that may not be an option for you either.

  • Ya a vasectomy is def. not an option at this point. My Dr. didn't mention anything about paragard so I don't know if they offer it, or if my insurance would cover it. The migraines are the only thing stopping me from being on the pill.

  • I'm going with Paraguard. Its been the only IUD in town for a long time so I'm sure your Dr. did or does them. My Dr. actually didn't recommend Mirena. They offer it but he said as a group (abt 120 dr.s) they've had like 6 I think (not sure of the exact #) of patients with very serious side effects to mirena. Its also a larger device than Paraguard, and only lasts 5 years as opposed to Paraguard which is 10.  I've also done every BC under the sun and really looking fwd to getting the IUD!
