i just started taking the mini pill and am excited to get back to my amazing sex life without the baby bump. but i realized i forgot to ask the doctor whether the mpill is active with the first dose or after a month (like the reg pill)?
any of you ladies know? or is this a "call the doctor and ask" type question?
Re: mini pill
Mine too.
I got pg on the mini-pill 2 months after I stopped BFing DD because I hadn't switched to the regular pill yet. But the mini-pill was effective for the 10 months I was BFing.
But to answer the original question, it's not effective the first month.
Yes, the efficacy is higher if you are nursing often - like 6+ times per day. Otherwise, it's a good idea to use something else.
Who said it was 40% effective? if you are EBF and take it the same time each day its nearly 100% effective for the 6 months after birth....
"If you're exclusively nursing your baby (meaning that your baby is taking in no formula or solid food), still haven't had a period, and are taking the minipill as directed, it's nearly 100 percent effective during the first six months after giving birth.
For women who aren't breastfeeding, the minipill is 99.5 percent effective when taken consistently and correctly, which means that five out of 1,000 women who take it properly will get pregnant in the first year. That makes it slightly less reliable than combination birth control pills, which are estimated to be about 99.7 to 99.9 percent effective with perfect use.
If you don't take the minipill exactly as prescribed, though ? for example, you miss a pill or even fail to take them at the same time each day ? the risk that you'll get pregnant is much higher, especially if you're not breastfeeding. And the more mistakes you make, the higher the risk. So while the minipill is a very reliable method of birth control for women who never miss any pills and follow the instructions to the letter, it's not the best method for everyone."
We're using condoms to be safe, even past the first month. I do not want another baby ever, let alone within the first year of DD's life!
However, I'm having so much trouble getting them in at the same time every day. I was fabulous about it before I got pregnant (DD was planned) but now it seems like she's nursing or something when I need to take it and if DH isn't home to bring it for me, I'll forget for an hour or so.
