Milk intolerance WWYD?

Our Ped thinks Maeve is milk intolerant and wants us to do a 2 week no dairy test (she said we could cheat and let her have some birthday cake but that's it).

Would you switch to soy formula for the 2 weeks and see what happens or switch to soy milk for the 2 weeks?  We were planning on switching to milk in a week had this not happened (she drinks milk based formula now).

Thoughts?

Re: Milk intolerance WWYD?

  • I would switch to soy milk...we switched DS to milk a couple weeks early 'cause I was tired of dealing with formula.

If for some reason soy isn't the answer, I'd rather have extra soy milk than soy formula!

  • M had a milk intolerance also and we went to soy milk.

fyi, I used soy milk in place of the milk his vanilla cake/frosting called for and it was super yummy for his 1st b.day.

Did this just come up recently?  What happened?

  • She's been having some major constipation and gas issues going on 2 months.  We cut out bananas and yogurt, upped fiber, extended periods sitting in a warm bath etc. and it didn't help.  Then we used suppositories for a week and she still had a tough time.  So now her poor bottom is inflamed and she has some fissures. Which I guess is common with milk intolerance.  So now we are trying this.  I really hope this is the answer, poor thing is in so much discomfort.  When she has to poop she literally screams because it hurts. It breaks my heart.

Did M grown out of it?  Or do you still stick to soy?

  • FWIW, Madelyn outgrew hers by 1.5 years.

I'd give soy milk a try.  It's cheaper and it certainly can't hurt.

  • He did outgrow it, mostly since he turned 3.  He could have milk if cooked/baked, but not yogurt, sourcream, milk.  We did soy and soy yogurt.

    Hope it helps!

I would do soy milk too. You are so close to one that a couple of weeks won't change anything.

Poor Maeve. My BFF's daughter has a difficult time pooping and it breaks my heart to hear her cry. Max has only been constipated a couple of times, but when he is, he hugs me really tight and cries. I hate it! I hope you guys figure this out soon, and that your sweet baby girl feels better quickly!

  • Poor thing.  I'd just do the soy milk.  You're so close to one year that I don't think a week or two is going to hurt.  I hope she outgrows it soon!
  • Poor kiddo, and poor you! I would do soy (or almond, if that has thet okay) milk, I don't think you need to do soy formula at this point.
