Cloth Diapering

New to CDing- diaper cover question

Ok, I hope this isn't a ridiculous question.

This is my first day CDing and I thought I was really prepared, but I guess not!  I'm using Indian prefolds and am trying a variety of covers.  So far today his poop leaked just a little bit on the leg gusset (but did not leak on clothing) of a BSWW.  Then later when I changed him the front top part that over laps the prefold on a Thirsties V-2 was wet.  And again on a Bummis Super lite.

I did a newspaper fold the first time.  Then I did a modified angel wing but didn't use a snappi.  Then I went back to the newspaper.  Poop has not spilled onto the cover except for that first time.  The prefold is a little long on him so I have to fold it over in the front and tuck it in the pocket of the cover and that's where the cover is getting wet.  I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.  It's also really bulky in the front that way, but I guess that's there to stay.

  • It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong.
  • Prefolds/covers have a bit of a learning curve, the more you do it, the easier it'll get and you'll learn which different folds/tricks work best for your baby.  I hear there are some great youtube videos that show how to do different folds too.  Sorry I don't have any better advice!  We only spent a short time in prefolds since DS was 9lbs at birth and quickly moved up in size.

  • Thirsties doesn't recommend tucking the prefold into the front flap of the cover.  Not sure why, but they don't.  We just fold over the excess prefold in the front, and fasten the cover over it so that no prefold shows.  Also, you HAVE to use a snappi if you stand any chance of not getting poop on the cover.  The older he gets, you may be able to get away with no snappi.  Even now, we have days where the poop gets on the cover if I don't snappi (like with a Flip cover or Weehuggers.)  Other than that, it's just trial and error - sounds like you're doing great!

  • Glad you asked this.  I have had a few poop leak mishaps with my prefold and bummis covers.  I didn't know if I wasn't doing her diaper tight enough or if I just need practice!  Guess I will keep at it.

You're not supposed to tuck into the cover with aplix covers. The cover flap is there to cover up the thread from sewing on the velcro. If those threads get wet they will wick through to the front.

Good to know! We got the stuff, excitedly opened them and then moved the next day. Dh did the packing and the info sheets weren't with the diapers. I'll have to hunt them down tomorrow because all but one cover is aplix.
