Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Orange juice

Is it ok to give a 7 month old OJ? I think what I have seen says a year for OJ because it can be acidic, am I right? I know DS doesn't NEED juice at all at this age, but I am just curious. I have given him a little apple juice watered down in his sippy cup and he hates it. The other day I was drinking a glass of OJ and I gave him a tiny sip off my cup... of course he loved it. Would it be bad to give him a little in his own cup? Anyone done this at this age?

Re: Orange juice

  • I think the acidic nature of OJ would hurt his little tummy.

Anyone have thoughts on the mango tango Odwalla for a baby? The main ingredient is mango puree then apple juice then water then OJ... Not that he needs it. Just curious.
  • Maybe try some of the Gerber juices watered down if you really want him to have some juice. I don't think a little bit here and there would do any harm.
  • I would be worried about the acid on his tummy. As well as a possible citric allergy. I have a really bad allergy to citrus fruit, which wasn't discovered until my parents were giving me OJ as an infant (due to a milk allergy).

  • Personally I would wait because of the potential for an allergy.  Also, since he really doesn't need it, I don't see the point of adding the sugar to his diet, even if it's just a little.
  • My 18 MO gets wicked diaper rash if he has too much citrus.  Plus any pediatrician will probably tell you they prefer that kids don't have any juice - the real fruit instead.
