Confused about when to pump. I am EBFing

I am currently BFing only. I am confused on when to pump during the day.  I want to start saving some for when we need to go somewhere or when I go back to work.

Should I pump after a morning feeding or at nite? On both sides or just the side I didn't feed on?

My daughter is almost 7 weeks old. I have pumped just a couple times this week so far.

I can't remember from when my son was little... sorry.

Any advice would be great!!   Thanks

  • I think its different for everyone and you just have to do what works best for you. When I first started pumping I would do it after the first morning feeding because I was fullest in the mornings. I would do both sides even if he only ate from one. Sometimes I would pump after feedings during the day as well to get some extra. Good luck!

  • I agree, you've just got to do what works for you and for your LO's schedule. If he regularly takes a long nap, you can always pump after he goes down. I usually get the most if I pump after feeding first thing in the morning. If I'm trying to add to my stash, I'll pump after each feeding when possible. I also added a pumping session before we go to bed at night. GL!

  • I EBF but am working on a freezer stash for returning to work.  This is what I do... DH gives a bottle of BM in the am (around 6 or 7 am).  So when I wake up at 7 or so, I pump both sides.  This is a very productive pumping session.  The rest of the day, I nurse LO as usual.  After her last feeding, around 8 or 8:30pm, I pump both sides.  The side she nursed on doesn't produce a whole lot, but it's still enough to make it worth it.  I nurse her when she wakes up around 3 or 4 am.  And the cycle repeats.  From the 2 pumping sessions, I set aside 3 ounces for the bottle and the rest gets frozen (about 10-12 oz).

I probably should pump more... but at this point, I honestly do not want to.
