So, in our bedroom there is a ceiling fan. It's actually quite a nice fan (if there is such a thing as a nice ceiling fan). I don't want to get rid of it right now.
The problem is, the geniuses that lived here before us installed it with a 36 inch downrod.
Um.... 9 foot ceiling + fan + 3 foot downrod = ceiling fan at just about the right height to chop off your head.
I'm not sure what these people were trying to accomplish... I guess they wanted it extra close to the bed so they could *really* feel the breeze? Who knows... this is really just a small example of their fatuity. I digress...
My question is this.... is it possible to simply remove the downrod and reinstall the fan directly to the junction box? Or might we be missing some essential parts (not screws.... but some other parts that would have come with the fan for flush mount installation). We don't have anything but the actual fan. And the stupid downrod. I'm just afraid to get it all down and realize it can't be put back without the downrod. I suppose we could get a much shorter downrod if this were the case.
Just wanted to see if anyone had done anything like this before.
Thanks!
Hannah
ps - Words that sound dirty to me but aren't: junction box. flush mount. downrod.
Re: NBR: ceiling fans - anyone ever mess with downrods?

That is helpful! Thank you Jersey. And, I absolutely referred to the offending metal bar as 'the hangy thing on top of the fan' until last weekend at Lowe's when a kind employee educated me.
Thanks!

We just did a fan project over the weekend and I found out that not all fans can be flush mount. But, I know when we were at Lowes they had an end cap to an aisle that was nothing but different length downrods in different colors. So, if nothing else you should at least be able to find a shorter one. Maybe check the brand and see if they have brand specific rods when you go to the hardware store?

Stillwaiting: Good idea on the shorter one. I think we're gonna go for it and take the sucker down and if all else fails - we'll get a 12" one and call it a day! It's got to be better than 36"!
Katie: Please do ask that handyman of yours! I'll take all information I can get, I like to be prepared!
I think it's just a matter of disconnecting the wires from the ceiling and stringing them through the new downrod.
I believe ours is 24". I remember it being shorter than we anticipated. Oh, and we purchased 2 possible lengths and returned one. We measured but weren't sure until we actually put that length up there with a blade to really judge the height.
